Level 3 Apprenticeship

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I joined the Corporate Audit department of Moore Stephens as an apprentice. I am career driven, and I like that the accountancy apprenticeship route is varied. Moore Stephens is based in over 100 countries – my dream, and future career goal, is to be working for Moore Stephens internationally within the USA.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship to avoid student debt and to be able to create the best possible future for myself. When considering my future options I found out that you don’t need to go to university to obtain qualifications, instead businesses like Moore Stephens offer the route of becoming a chartered accountant in 5 years without needing a degree. I am also money driven so it appealed to me that I can earn and learn.

Did you always know you wanted to do an apprenticeship?

No, not at all. When I left sixth form I had no idea what I wanted to do – I knew that university wasn’t for me, but sometimes I felt like it was the only option. It wasn’t until I had done real research into apprenticeships that I made my decision. I knew the reasons why I wanted to do an apprenticeship, but it was a very hard decision because there aren’t many ways of finding out how rewarding and good they can actually be.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My work is extremely varied. I get to work between client site and the office, and my typical day consists of completing audit processes, providing support to my colleagues and learning from those around me. I am picking new things up every day, through both my practical work and my theoretical studies. I spend most of my time working on the computer, but I also have the opportunity to interact, and communicate, with the client face to face. The nature of my work heavily depends on which clients I’m booked to, and as a result my schedule is varied and I’m never doing the same thing for days on end, which I find motivating and exciting.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The people and places I have encountered in my career have been so interesting, and have made my time here extremely enjoyable. I enjoy visiting client offices and meeting a variety of people with different stories and backgrounds. I love to discover and explore, and I find it so great that I can get paid to do it as part of my job.

Do you have any tips for any students considering an apprenticeship?

My biggest tip would be to accept that you will have to put in the hard work and fully commit yourself, but know that the end result will be worth it.
