I had a bit of a varied work experience since leaving school – dental technology, retail sales, retail operations, recruitment – so I had had the opportunity to find out what I wanted to do, but also, exactly what I didn’t want to do. I knew that I wanted to work within Supply Chain to help support a business, and build upon what was already there. When I came across the apprenticeship opportunity with Unilever, I knew straight away that it was something that I could do, grow and develop in, and it would be working for exactly the type of company that I wanted to work for.

During my apprenticeship with Unilever, I enjoyed the responsibility from the word go, as well as the training and support that is always at hand. The apprenticeship is designed to support you and push you in equal measure, to get the best out of you.

I found that I was offered more of a challenge than I expected to face when I started my apprenticeship. There was always more work for me to take on, and there are always new people to meet, learn from and network with. You think that because you are an apprentice, you can’t earn respect or challenge ways of working, but I found myself completely wrong with this thought process!

I couldn’t be any more of an advocate for apprenticeships than I already am. If you aren’t sure what you want to do, and think University may not be for you (as it wasn’t for me!), then you would be missing a huge opportunity by not considering an apprenticeship. You get vital work experience, qualifications paid for you so you’re debt free, and you get paid for the work you do… where’s the downside to that?! My only regret is not going for one sooner.

I met my current Line Manager through networking and pushing for work experience in different areas of the business. She saw huge value in my skill set, as well as the fact that I fit well in the team, and fought to create a position for me in the factory where I could add benefit.

6 months down the line, I am now covering a Maternity leave in a higher graded job role, and I absolutely love it. The support and challenge balance still remains the same, and I can feel my experience and confidence growing all of the time.
