Higher IT Apprentice Joba Fakile
Why did you apply for the Unilever Apprenticeship scheme?
Unilever stood out to me as I knew it was a huge company and it would be a great opportunity if I managed to get it. I read more about the company, who they are and what they do and I thought it would be exciting to work for this company.
Did you ever consider the university route, or did you always want to do an Apprenticeship?
I did, I actually wanted to do Architecture (I know, very different from IT). But when that didn’t work out I looked at doing IT, as I’ve always been interested in it, however none of the courses looked all that interesting to me so I started looking at apprenticeships.
In a nutshell, what do you do on a day to day basis?
I’m on a Carelines transformation project where we aim to move markets we operate in around the globe onto a new CRM (Consumer Relationship Management) platform called Salesforce This is where all complaints, comments, questions etc. about Unilever products go. On a day to day basis I support markets in their transition from their old CRM solution onto Salesforce. As part of these transitions we have to prepare the system for the new market and to make sure any old processes or services they had are compatible and are now routed to the new system.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve learnt or experienced working at Unilever?
A few months ago the next markets we were rolling this solution out to was Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. As part of these roll outs we run a ‘Train the Trainer’ session where members of our team go out and train a couple of people from each market on how to use the new system to a standard whereby they can go back and train others how to use it. I was given the opportunity to fly out to Australia with another colleague to train the users from all the above markets on how to use the system. It was an amazing experience to have so early in my career which I won’t forget anytime soon!
What do you love most about your role and why?
What I love the most about my role is interacting with so many different people from different markets around the world. Although sometimes the early or late calls, depending on their time zones aren’t the best, I have virtually ‘met’ some great people.
What’s the most exciting project/thing you’ve done to date?
This is my first project so far. It’ll be hard to top excitement-wise but I’ll keep you posted.
Has your apprenticeship at Unilever changed the way you think about your future career?
Yes 100%, I have a clearer idea of want I want to do in the future and what sort of role I see myself fitting in to. I think the 3 years of invaluable experience I’ll have by the end of my apprenticeship will put me in good stead for the next step of my career.
What advice would you give to somebody wanting to apply for an apprenticeship at Unilever?
Be prepared for each stage of the application but importantly at the assessment centre be yourself! It’s often your personality that helps decide what team they believe you’ll be suitable for.More Experiences
