Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) profile

About The Science and Technology Council (STFC)

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation, is a place where scientists, technologists, engineers and business support teams explore the unknown and turn what they find into work that changes the world around us.

We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of. With access to our world-class facilities, people like you are helping us to drive ground-breaking advances in science, engineering, computing, and technology.

Our work is focused on inspiring impact – to make a real-world difference to people’s lives and the environment around us. Whether it’s sending probes into space or finding new ways to treat cancer, everyone here plays a vital role in making a positive difference to society.

Why join STFC?

Come and do amazing work whilst following a structured learning programme that develops not just your capabilities but also your confidence to thrive and grow in the workplace. Work alongside world-leading scientists and technologists, shape projects that improve lives, and daily life, in the UK and far beyond. Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you’re equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

STFC’s award winning apprenticeships (we are Investors In People gold standard accredited), support the early careers of employees in a variety of disciplines at a range of different apprenticeship levels – from level 3 to level 6.

Supported by a dedicated team of apprenticeship co-ordinators, managers, leaders, experienced and trusted training providers and colleagues, we can support you to be the
best version of yourself.

In addition to following a curriculum of learning based on national standards, there will be many other opportunities for development including access to the UKRI training
and development catalogue, digital learning platform, apprentice team development activities, projects and public engagement opportunities all finished off with an achievement awards evening on completion.

All apprenticeships are supported by an external training provider who will provide practical learning, ongoing reviews and help for end-point assessment.

Life at STFC

STFC offers a benefits package crafted to provide an excellent work/life balance including 30 days’ annual leave, an outstanding index linked pension scheme, 10.5 public and privilege days, Christmas closure and flexible working hours.

We believe that everyone has a right to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be provided with equal opportunities to flourish and succeed in an environment that enables them to do so. We have a range of employee diversity, inclusion and network groups, including but not limited to a Women in STEM network, a Carers Network, Parents Support Group, LGBTQ+ network and Mental Health First Aiders.

These networks provide our people with peer support, networking opportunities and the chance to lead positive change

We are aiming to be bold. In July 2019, the UK government committed to achieving ‘net-zero’ by 2050. Not only is research and innovation critical to delivering this national ambition, we must also take a lead in our own operations. Therefore, we are aiming to be ‘net-zero’ a decade earlier, by 2040 at the latest.

We ask some of the biggest questions in the universe, to answer some of the biggest challenges in the world. Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers and business support team explore the unknown across every field you could think of. And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us. What could you achieve with the world-leading facilities and experts of one of Europe's largest research organisations by your side? Join us and discover what’s possible
