How did you apply for TUI UK&I?

I applied for TUI directly through the TUI Travel Jobs website. I knew that I wanted to work in the Travel industry, and saw this opportunity was available. I completed an online application form that then led to a telephone interview. After completing this I attended an assessment day in head office. This was a challenging but insightful day, and I could tell immediately that TUI was a great company to work for. Following the day I received a call the week after to find out I had been offered the job.

What was the induction like?

My induction was brilliant. Being my first full time job in an office, I was really nervous and didn’t know what to expect. Luckily I had an induction that calmed these nerves and allowed me to get settled in straight away. I followed a set timetable for two weeks that ensured I had introductions with various departments and allowed me time to complete all necessary training. The induction period also included a two week handover from Rosie, the school leaver who I was replacing within Product. This allowed me to get involved straight away, while having someone there to answer any questions directly.

What do you do on a daily basis?

I now work in the Product Development Team. My day to day role varies so much I couldn’t really say what I do on a daily basis. My role often includes conducting research on our current hotels to see if they are suitable for a certain differentiated product. Innovation is a key part of my role, and the team that I am in, so we are always actively thinking of new ideas and concepts to offer our customers that will improve their overall holiday experience.

What do you enjoy most?

What I enjoy most is the team I work in, and the variance in the work that I do. As I mentioned above, no two days are the same so my job never gets repetitive and there are always new challenges around the corner. This not only makes it enjoyable, but it is great for my development. The people are also brilliant. The atmosphere around the office is so relaxed, as well as being productive. The social aspect of working for TUI is great with events taking place throughout the year.

What skills are necessary to perform well?

To perform well at my job I have to be constantly thinking innovatively and outside of the box. We, as the development team need to generate ideas that are going to improve our customer’s holiday experiences as well as being commercially viable. I also have to be analytical. It is not just about developing new products, we of course have to analyse the performance of our current ones. I am often asked to conduct analysis on products and evaluate how they are performing/have performed for a certain season. This then allows me to present back my findings to management.

What advice would you give to someone applying to TUI UK&I?

My advice to someone applying to TUI UK&I would be to research the company before completing your application form or attending any interviews. If you can demonstrate that you have knowledge of the company, this sets a great first impression to your assessor. Also, remember that although your job on the Commercial School Leaver Scheme will not be customer facing, at the end of the day, whatever we do has our customer’s in-sight. So make it clear that you are aware of this and include this as well as your commercial knowledge, which of course is vital for this particular role.

How has TUI school leaver programme affected your career prospects?

The School Leaver Programme has started my career in a brilliant way and I strongly feel it will help me in the future. The amount I have learnt in the last year has completely exceeded my expectations and the experience I have gained is invaluable. I have been given real responsibilities from day one and they have increased in line with my experience. I have had the opportunity to communicate with senior management and directors on a regular basis, and this has developed my communication and confidence skills massively.
