  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current role at Tesco is a Technology Apprentice. Based in the Welwyn Garden City head office, I learn and work on almost anything that is IT-related within the internal structure of Tesco. The work that entails consists of working on the network structure of Tesco, in the range of just pinpointing and repairing any broken areas, to implementing new and innovative networking technologies. On the apprenticeship I have also been to brand new Data centres where working on powerful machines for critical maintenance was the norm. The Projects that I get involved in are mostly for innovative technology, that has the potential to change the retail industry on a technological scale.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While on the scheme I am completing a BTeC Level 4 in IT systems, a partnership that Tesco has with Hertfordshire Regional College. There are also many training courses that I get to attend on, through Tesco's own training academy learning numerous amount of business related skills. While on the scheme, you get to learn what the IT infrastructure is like in one of the largest retailers in the world. While also having the opportunity to dive in head first and physically learn what it is like yourself.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is very enjoyable with great support from colleagues, managers and even those who are in very high positions. I believe the enjoyment of the programme has actually surpassed that of what I though it would be like with a retailer.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Tesco?
  • Throughout my time here at Tesco I have felt that I have gained allot of value, as there are so many different knowledgeable people that you create all sorts of networks with, this is important for gaining knowledge out of those people to develop your own knowledge. At this point in time, I feel like a jack of all trades within Tesco's infrastructure.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is very good, as there is a 'settling-in' period of around 4-5 months to get yourself familiar with a working office environment. With this you are given your own personal line managers to seek help from, as well as a personal mentor and the early careers team. They have also implemented a 'buddy' scheme where you will be assigned one of the previous apprentices to talk to, if you were to have any enquires about the scheme. I feel this is exceptional good as they would of been in the same position a year ago.

  • The support is great, as there is always someone you can seek at all times. I feel that I can ask almost anything that would then be answered in an appropriate manner, whether it is professional or personal.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Receiving allot of help and support from my employers, they also have a great attitude in supporting me in the right direction. If there were any equipment I need for working efficiently, there would be no time before I would have it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary more than covers my living costs and rent. As I have had to relocate the the office area the rent can be quite costly, however the salary we receive more than covers this. There are also many investing schemes that they offer, and a world-class pension scheme.

  • 9. Would you recommend Tesco to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because I feel it is such a great scheme where you are able to learn so much about an internal IT structure of a major retailer, with the opportunity to work on critical technology relating to the company. The opportunity to work in almost any country you desire, along with a nice salary package. The scheme then allows you to go ahead with the knowledge you have obtained, to further your career wherever you wish.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tesco?
  • The Apprenticeship is very technological and it would benefit to show your understanding of current technologies as well as some enthusiasm towards technology. The most stereotypical advice I can give, is to act yourself as they like to see genuine people.
