1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
The current programme I am on is an 18 month scheme with three different placements. I am currently in my second placement which is at an underwriters. The day to day work I complete includes processing slips, endorsements, declarations etc. I also attend meetings with the underwriting teams and help assist them at the box. The great aspects of my placement is that I move around the syndicate alot, spending time with the Property, Liability and Marine teams. This is very helpful to gain knowledge into which class best suits me and which I most enjoy and it's a great way to get to know the different underwriters.
2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have learnt so much whilst being part of the Lloyd's scheme. I came into the insurance industry knowing very little, and eight months in I am often taken aback by what I now know. Whilst studying for my insurance Certificate and working along side experts everyday I have improved a vast amount of skills. These would include, communication, general insurance knowledge and how to succeed within the sector . I have also developed my ICT skills through the use of Excel and the training courses I have been apart of have allowed me to develop my own personal brand confidence and approachability.
3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
I enjoy every aspect of the apprenticeship. The people I work with and meet everyday are polite, friendly and helpful and the work I get given is interesting and gives me independance and responsibility. I love working in the City and being surrounded by such a positive and ambitious environment. It has exceeded all expectations I had prior to joining the scheme.
4. How valued do you feel by Lloyd's of London?
Lloyd's have given me brilliant placements which have allowed me to learn and meet great people. It's true to say that Lloyd's have done everything they can to make our apprenticeship as benefitial as possible. I feel extremely valued by Lloyd's.
5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
The programme is very well organised and structured. Our induction was a month long and although some felt this was too long I thought it allowed us to fully settle in before being thrown into work. We are given lots of support, both from Lloyd's and from our managers in our individual placements.
6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
The support I have recieved has been excellent, I havent had any problems however I know if I did then there would be multiple people to talk to for guidance.
6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
Similarly I have had excellent support from my employers. Starting in the industry with no experience would seem daunting, however on this scheme everybody just wants to help develop your confidence, career and just be as helpful as they can.
7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
I think the salary we recieve is very good. I have managed to save money as well as have enough to use for my social life. However I live in London meaning my transport costs are not too expensive, others who live further away may not find they have enough.
8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
I would like to be invited to more company events and activities. I think all of the apprentices would agree that these would be a great way to get to know eachother better and a way to promote the apprenticeship.
9a. Would you recommend Lloyd's of London to a friend? *
