  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, my job role can vary quite a lot. Depending on which area of the business I am working In, I could be inspecting components assembling engines or manufacturing one off components for development purposes. My apprenticeship is based in manufacturing, which can be a challenge because of the tolerances we have to work to, but as a company the have lots of staff who are willing to help and share there knowledge with you. the also give you a lot of responsibility but only if you can handle it, the don't make you do anything that you couldn't do but they always push you to make sure that you are developing your skills. Another thing they like to get you involved with is the cutting edge technology products that they design and manufacture, if you want to see some incredible machining for next generation technology they will let you get involved.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Whit the wealth of knowledge you have at your disposal there is a lot to take in at first, but as you start to develop all of the skills that you already have and they will always make sure that you are developing the skills you need to succeed, I myself as a machinist have had training on both CAD and CAM systems to help me be effective in the areas that I work in. they want to provide the best training for you so that when you finish your course and start to work full time you are one of the best out there.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • the programme can be a lot of hard work and a challenge, which is something that you either succeed in or just get by, which when it comes to working in a team environment you will be pushed to make sure that you are succeeding, it really shows the family culture that this company has, everybody is there for the same reason. As it stands at the moment I am really enjoying the challenge of having to push myself to become the best machinist that I can be and I am also looking forward to looking back at the end of the apprenticeship to see where I have come from.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains?
  • when you work for a company that is very focused on a team effort to win races sometimes it can feel like you are forgotten about, but if you do something that puts yourself out or something of exemplary standards you will get celebrated for it as well, more often than not it will be from your line manager or you colleagues around you. More often than not you will also be asked to shared your opinion or even come up with an idea to solve a problem or how to set up a machine for a specific task, and when you check it with colleges or your boss they will give you constructive criticism about what you have done if they think that it needs to be looked at, but they also celebrate when you get something correct.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the company have now got a well structured and driven programme, originally when I started there were a few issues but most of the have been resolved now. they offer some support but it is hard to find time to get some paper work done when you are at work so it can be difficult to find time.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • with our training provider being around at least once a month to see us we have access to support and guidance when we need it.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive some support through our employer but we are expected to do most of the work during our home time, as we are more often than not working all of the time at work and we don't have a lot of down to tackle some of the paper work unless we are at a desk.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I have had to move about one hundred miles away from my home down south which isn't a problem but it can sometimes be a stretch to get to the end of the month and to keep money in the savings account. the living cost of the areas surrounding work can be more expensive just because of having to either live in a village that is out of the way or having to live in a town centre to stay close to your social life.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company does do quite a lot of events out of the normal routine like summer BBQ's and Christmas parties, and as a group of apprentices we try to organise days out as a group like go karting or paintballing or other such thins that get us out of the house. there are quite a few things in town to do, rugby clubs, foot ball clubs and the gym are a few things but it only requires you to have a browse on the web to se a whole list of activity's to do.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Where could be better to start of your professional career as a machinist than the world champion F1 team. but they also offer the best training with the best colleges to become the best there is.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains?
  • just be yourself and let your personality shine through, and show that you have knowledge of F1 because if you don't know what is what on the race track then it means you don't follow the sport and don't have the passion to keep yourself motivated if the going gets hard.
