  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day job consists of collecting concrete samples and bringing them back to the lab. After that, I test samples by putting them in a crushing machine and taking note of the strength of the concrete. This is essentially to give proof to customers that they’re concrete is up to spec.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed lots of skills including getting better at meeting new people as I get to meet lots of people every day. I also have learnt new skills about concrete and how to test it which is absolutely vital for my job role and will help me in the future.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme for the most part but can get a bit repetitive. But I also do get the opportunity to do different things, especially when I go to the training park as part of my apprenticeship and get to learn things I don’t necessarily do in my day to day jobs.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At first the programme wasn’t very organised as we were the first cohort in this particular programme but as the year has gone on, the organisation has massively improved and things aren’t left last minute anymore. However, it could still be improved as it can be a bit inconsistent sometimes.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employers is really good. Tarmac as a whole offers amazing support systems for all sorts of problems, whether it’s just a bit of stress or you need help. For example, if your mental health is struggling, there has been times where Tarmac have paid for people’s therapy.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support with training is also really good. They have supported me in ways such as providing me with opportunities for growth and development, recognising my hard work and contributions, or being understanding and accommodating when i’ve needed time off or other support. There is always help available with the actual work towards my qualifications if I need it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification has helped me perform my job role better by giving me a deeper understanding of my job and actually help me know what I am doing. A lot of things don’t make sense without knowledge behind it but because of my training I know what i’m doing therefore I can do it to the best of my ability.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I believe there are extra curricular activities to get involved in although I haven’t had the opportunity yet but I have only been with the company a few months so it’s hard to say, but from what i’ve heard from other employees, there are a lot of opportunities to take.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tarmac to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Tarmac are a great employer for someone my age, great pay for someone who has just left school however it isn’t a job I want to do for the rest of my life, but it’s a great way to kick off your career and the company are always looking for new people with qualifications to hire.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • Have a bit of knowledge on the company as a whole and be open to learning new skills. You might have to go out of your comfort zone for certain jobs, but it’s always important to be honest and don’t be afraid to speak up if you have concerns or are uncomfortable about something.
