  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

    • I am a studio engineer higher apprentice so I work closely with design. I often do feasibility studies which include gathering engineering data and discussing new innovations with research and design. I work on several different projects and have the responsibility of leading one of the smaller projects on my own. At the same time, I am studying for a BEng part time on block release.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

    • The whole apprenticeship has been a learning curve, from the PEOs in first year to the BEng I am studying for now. There are other skills I have developed such as communication and team working.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

    • I very much enjoy working in the department, I am part of an excellent team. I find the studying side of the apprenticeship can be dull at times. Overall, the company is much better than I anticipated.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by JLR?

    • I feel the last 12 months have seen me develop into a useful member of the team adding value with the work I produce. I feel much more valued because of this.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

    • The programme itself can lack organisation at times but this is due to it's infancy. I am in the first year of the higher apprenticeship scheme so some organisation errors were to be expected. The support we are given is very good and the Industrial Training Managers (ITMs) are very good at listening to problems and finding solutions.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

    • The university support is a little lacking. I feel like when we are not actually at the university, we get forgotten about.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

    • The support I receive from JLR is very good and also very much appreciated! My direct line manager can be busy but makes time if there is an important or pressing issue. The apprentice team also supports us through our ITMs.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

    • I have taken up several opportunities of CSR events and also using the ELS (employee learning scheme) to go away on a rock climbing holiday.

    • Yes

    • I feel like JLR is a good company to work for with many benefits. I feel valued and looked after.

    • Take your time on the application form and get help from others when applying. Be yourself and good luck!
