I am a Controls & Standards Engineer. I our department we deal with the automation of both Body In White (BIW) and Trim & Final (T&F) areas. This involves implementing new systems and overseeing the installation of new manufacturing equipment from an electronics/controls point of view. Another part of our job involves creating, reviewing, editing and enforcing a range of standards. These standards dictate a number of things including what equipment should be used for a variety of tasks. On a day to day basis, we meet with various people from different departments and vendors to discuss plans of action and conduct a number of on going or safety related tests on various items of equipment or machinery.
So far during my apprenticeship I have learn a great deal of knowledge in general engineering. This has been achieved through two years of college studying a wide range of subjects from thermodynamics to business improvement techniques. The apprenticeship has also enabled to begin developing new skills that wouldn't be offered to me if i just attended university such as communication nd organisation.
The programme is something that I am enjoying so far. The knowledge I am learning is interesting and I get a along with the people I work with. The culture here is also enjoyable as I am able to work independently in a relaxed environment whilst having structured objectives and goals.
I feel that I am relatively valued. The job I have is quite difficult and requires a good deal of experience so as of yet I am not at the same level as the people I work with. This is something that is recognised by my colleagues and they do a lot to support me.
The programme has a very defined structure. From year 1 to 6 there is a clear plan that has been given to me. We are also given reviews every 3 months that enable us to track our progress and gain feedback from our managers and other team members.
Support us good as I am given regular reviews and everybody involved is always happy to help.
Although I do not see my manager very often, any info or support from him will be relayed through my mentor. My team members are also very helpful and always want to see be succeed.
Very well.
Outside of work events are something that I rarely here about.
