  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day tasks and interactions change daily depending on the line of work/training scheduled for that day. this could include bespoke training courses, University academic studies or on-the-job learning. I interact with a wide range of customers and stakeholders, ranging from the Electricity National Control Room (ENCC) to Distribution Network Owners. My responsibilities will therefore change but one of my key duties is to create and deliver operational training to the ENCC.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to develop my academic skills including mathematics and literature review. Whilst on the job I will be and have learnt new skills in order to complete the apprenticeship standard on Electrical Power Networks Engineering with EUIAS. This consists of a range of engineering skills via the completion of projects and communication skills whilst engaging with customers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been excellent in my development both academically and professionally. I have really enjoyed being on the apprenticeship as it has given me the opportunity to meet lots of new people and work in a company with a welcoming culture. It has exceeded my expectations to which I am very happy and grateful for.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very organised and structured in a way that no 2 weeks are generally the same. It mixes academic study, training courses and on the job work placements across the 2 year period which creates a good environment to work on many skills, work and projects at the same time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I have received as an apprentice has been fantastic from all different levels. Both managerial and staff level support was very helpful to complete studies, work and continue learning something new every day. The company provide a number of great benefits which are easily accessible and helpful in all lines of support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has been good in supporting my studies. I received a academic mentor/tutor from day one which has been a point of contact for me throughout my studies. Furthermore, all of the universities resources were accessible during the course of the qualification which provided benefit to my studies and work based project.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I acquired in electrical power engineering (FdEng) has been fundamental in my role within National Grid ESO. It has given me the base knowledge to understand how to operate the GB electricity transmission system in real time. I learnt about electrical theory including characteristics of power system and electrical machines.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a wide variety of extra curricular events that can be attended. The National Grid ESO office is located next to a Cricket/Tennis club and local parks where a weekly football event is hosted internally after work. This has been great to network and meet new colleagues. Alternatively, there are many events to be apart of ranging from local school/community events to COP26.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The Higher Apprenticeship scheme with National Grid ESO has really kickstarted my career and helped me to develop professionally. My colleagues and peers have helped massively with that, as they have supported me the whole way through. Furthermore, the ESO is the only company in Great Britain which operates the GB transmission system to which I take pride in the work we do. Fantastic company to work for.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • The application / assessment centre is designed to get the best/most out of you so come prepared with a wide range of research, scenarios and personal experiences so you can demonstrate your depth of knowledge and understanding. Ensure you take every opportunity that is given to you. National Grid ESO has so much to offer so whether you are an apprentice or staff grade, take every opportunity to develop yourself and your team.
