  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My current rotation is in the Manufacturing Engineering team where I support the manufacture processes and determine what can be changed to reduce costs, improve EHS for operators and reduce waste. My next rotation is in the composite design team where I will be learning the design process behind composite propeller design.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt a lot about the world of engineering and the process behind fully compliant products. As I have been studying aerospace engineering at UWE Bristol this has meant that I am able to implement the engineering methods that I have been taught into real world products which is very challenging but rewarding at the same time. I have also been sent on external training courses to learn about CAD software which is used in the company.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy working with propellers as I find the technology behind it fascinating, more importantly the manufacturing method to develop such a strong and complex product. The team I work in is quite small and does lack in culture which can be contributed to the pandemic, however the company is encouraging more team building exercises to promote a more friendly workplace.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme has lacked structure as I am the only degree apprentice in my company and this meant that the company lacked information and exposure to the degree apprentice programme. Despite this, I get a lot of support from my line manager with regards to the NVQ modules that I have to complete as well as my uni modules.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer as I struggle with an ongoing health condition and this can limit the work I complete. But the HR team and my line manager are very understanding and always offering further support. My line manager has been helping with issues with my NVQ providing his experience to help answer questions.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have regular meetings with my training advisor at the city of bristol college and this is very helpful if I am ever stuck on a certain section of the NVQ portfolio. This is massively encouraging as I do struggle to understand the NVQ modules occassionally and he provides clarity and points me in the right direction to complete the requirement.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have learnt a vast amount of engineering methods at UWE and this has directly affected how well I can perform in the office when asked to anlayse a product. When I completed my rotation in the stress team I was able to use the stress analysis learnt at the uni, however I still find that I am learning new techniques whilst in the company as well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is the occasional company event like a curry night or bowling night, however, since the pandemic there hasn't been as many events like this. The company has a strong reliance on apprentices to run the STEM events and I really enjoy taking part in these as it is inspiring the next generation of engineers.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great company to work for with lots of great opportunities throughout the company. The company benefits are fantastic and always improving. GE is a company at the forefront of technology and their desire to improve all aspects of the company through LEAN workshops and challenges is very impressive.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • It is very important to GE to able to work well in a team and they value this a lot, any experience you have in a team environment will be valued massively. A willingness to improve is very well respected and I have found that it is encouraged by everyone in the company.
