  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a water network technician is to manage a set number of areas and analyse the usage of water in them. I must determine what is usage and what is waste caused by leaks and large users and get them resolved by using the equipment i have in my van.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many different skills that i didnt have prior to starting my role at severn trent. I have learnt all about how to use different tools ive never even heard of before such as: correlators, ground mics, listening sticks, loggers, CAT and Genny's and i also have background knowledge of the water industry which i never knew previously existed. This apprenticeship has opened my eyes to a lot more that i didnt previously know.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I can say without a doubt that i very much enjoy my apprenticeship and the job role. This has developed in many ways from when i first started from first getting to grips with the trade and then progressing to become better with what i already knew and i think you could ask the other fellow apprentices the same and would mostly answer the same.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has had a strong structure from the very start and has always been open with the expectations and requirements of its apprentices too. The support and training i have been provided has been given by current or past tradesmen and this has helped myself to develop at an even quicker pace.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive as much or as little support from my employer as i require. Severn Trent always let it be known that if there is anything they can do to help whether it be for mental reason or just simply struggling with a simple task then there is always someone there to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have personally not needed too much support from my training provider as i have taken the work given to me and strived to achieve a high level of work and submit it as often as i can. However, i am in constant contact with the provider and they always let it be known that if there is anything further i need then they will do what they can to ensure that their apprentices are happy.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification along with the work i carry out on a day to day basis on site helps greatly to get a higher level of understanding and knowledge of the assets in the ground with is even more crucial as these assets are ones we cannot see and having attention to detail is very important to being successful in this role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many different activities that workers can take park in such as sporting events, competitions and volunteering within the community however i have not taken part in any of these activities to focus on my work and training but would be something i am interested in doing in the future.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is a very friendly one that looks after and cares for its workers. Not only that but there are lots of opportunities to progress further within the company is someone has the ambition and strive or gain valuable transferable skills which would be desirable to other companies as well

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • I would say to anyone who is even a small bit interested or possibly not even sure what they want to do to apply and give it a shot. As long as you have the right attitude and are willing to work and learn hard then this is a job for life that is always fulfilling.
