  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Serving customers, accepting delivery and putting it away, filling up the merchandise in the customer area, cleaning, health and safety, fire alarm control, stock checking, putting EPOS parcels away, contacting customers if something is wrong with their order, attending regional meetings via zoom call, new catalogue launch set ups, speaking to other departments via email or telephone

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I knew how the shop ran on a day to day basis but I have learnt the following: how to deal with difficult conversations/customers, managing a team based on their skill sets, understanding our scorecard and more about finances, how to upsell and cross sell and even developing my knowledge on equality and diversity.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed the programme and would like to do a level 4 qualification and even become an apprentice assessor myself. I have learnt so much. I was originally a supervisor but was upgraded to an assistant manager a few months into the programme because I had developed my management skills.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was a bit overwhelming to start with. You are given a reflective diary which looks like a lot but once you have got into it, it's easy to do. You normally have 3-4 weeks to complete each module of the course with a webinar halfway through each module. The reflective diary is a great way to organise your time during the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received loads of support from my employer. My manager in the branch is very supportive, giving me time to do my work and letting me go home early if I need time to get work done. She is currently on the level 4 course so we are happy to help and support each other.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My coach is fantastic. We had a different one at the beginning and he was just as good. However, the new one took over and has helped me look into what I want to do in the future. You don't actually get any communication outside your coach but to be honest, he is all you I have needed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This course has helped me perform better for my role. I started off as a supervisor and ended up being promoted to Assistant Manager of the store. I am able to handle my time a lot better because of this course and I have learnt how to coach a team and utilise the skills I have learnt on the course to get my team up to scratch.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There isn't loads. I am part of an exclusive LGBTQ+ group which has members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies from every single part of Travis Perkins. I work for Toolstation and there is a few of us from TS in the group. It is a great way to make friends within the travis perkins group.
