  • 1. Please give an overview of what your Insight involved:
  • I learnt about the different streams within Accounting, ways to get into the sector and the steps required to become a qualified accountant. There was a presentation from a senior member of the company who described his journey into the company and the sector, which was very insightful as I was able to get an understanding of how the industry is changing and evolving. Also a talk from a current apprentice at the company was interesting as it opened up the idea that there is more than one way to get into accounting and it is not necessary to complete a degree.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your Insight?
  • Being able to ask questions to the speakers of the event allowed me to gain confidence in expressing my questions and concerns, however since it was an online event it did limit my ability to develop other skills. Despite the limitations due to the nature of the event being online, it still had been a valuable experience speaking to current employees at the firm.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your Insight?
  • I enjoyed the Insight to a large extent as it consisted not only of presentations but also a question led discussion, which allowed me not only have moments to absorb information but also reflect on this by asking questions to deepen my understanding. Also the multiple rooms with varying discussions that you could freely enter and exit was enjoyable since if there was a point where I was no longer engaged in the current talk, or it no longer applied to me, I could explore other topics in different talks.

  • 4. How well organised was your Insight?
  • It was very organised as there was a clear timetable, which included presentations and talks/discussions, of varying topics that you could leave or enter, to explore specific topics or learn more about specific concerns. There also was clear instructions at the end of each session about what the next session would be about and how to access it.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt a lot about the company culture through the reflections of employees and learning about the different societies and groups that you can join at the company to meet more people who may have similar interests to you. I also was introduced to the views and ethos of the company and its inclusive nature.

  • 6. How much did your Insight help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • It helped me significantly in deciding my future career path as it gave me a general insight into what the sector entails and the ways to get a job in this career. It also divided accounting into various streams which I was previously not aware of, allowing me to make a decision on what interested me and what didn't, allowing me to question whether I would like to join this industry in the future.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • No I was not reimbursed for this experience since the programme was online, therefore it practically did not have any costs. Therefore I was not reimbursed for the Insight Day as it was not a face to face event, which meant that there were no costs for participating in the event.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes there was opportunities for networking and meeting other employees through the discussion groups that you could choose which you would like to join. Through the chat box I was able to ask questions, although it did limit understanding as I could not vocally ask my questions. However, even through just the chat box I was able to ask many questions and put out my concerns.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The Insight Day was very engaging and answered many questions for me about my potential future career in accounting. The day was very well organised and it had a good balance of presentations and opportunities to ask questions and address specific questions. Information that I was given was very relevant to what I wanted to take from the event so it was very helpful.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • Make sure to ask loads of questions as it is a very valuable opportunity and is a very good starting point into understanding more about the accounting sector. I would encourage you to also apply for the BDO work experience if the Insight Day does interest you. Even if you are only vaguely interested you should take every opportunity to learn and strengthen your decisions on whether you want to go into accounting or not.
