  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, I was expected to support pupils in class and deliver small-group or 1:1 interventions during lessons, and to supervise and interact with pupils during breaks and lunchtimes. I also attended meetings on a fortnightly basis, and helped with the planning and preparation of lesson resources.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned new IT skills related to the subject I was supporting in, and through working on the assignments set, I have gained skills in all the areas related to the teaching assistant role, such as safeguarding, health and safety, and supporting pupils with special educational needs. I have also developed teamwork and communication skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme very much, as I worked in a friendly and supportive school environment, and the pupils were full of character and very enthusiastic. I also enjoyed learning new skills and working with others to achieve common goals. The training provider and Inspire ATA also created a sociable work culture.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme consists of remote training, which takes place during half-terms and holidays, as well as 1:1 support from a tutor who oversees the completion of assignments and preparation for the End-Point Assessment. The expectations for meeting the criteria are made very clear and delivered in manageable stages, which makes the course less overwhelming.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager has been exceptionally supportive, meeting with me on a 1:1 basis during the time I was struggling on my course, and has helped me to work with the school to see the apprenticeship to completion. She is understanding and compassionate, approachable and always willing to help in any situation.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received 1:1 support on a monthly or bi-monthly basis from my training provider and feedback on all my assignments. We also received Safeguarding training at multiple points in the year as a refresher. All material to support with assignments was uploaded to a e-portfolio platform, which made everything easy to access.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • All the knowledge gained from assignments helps me to understand the different aspects of the TA role, including the laws involved and responsibilities towards pupils and the school. Being observed and receiving feedback from my line manager and other members of staff has helped me to improve the way in which I support pupils in lessons.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Inspire ATA organises social events where you can meet other apprentices on an informal basis and we were encouraged to join LinkedIn to network with other professionals. This has been online due to Covid19, but has nevertheless been well-organised and entertaining. Apprentices were also included in staff socials at the placement school.
