  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would say that my day-to-day varies as you are part of a rotation programme. I am currently undertaking my Quantity Surveying Rotation which means my day-to-day includes jobs such as: paying subcontractors, carrying out procurement and creating SC orders. I interact with a number of people both internally and externally within the business.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am currently studying towards my BSc Honors Degree in Quantity Surveying. Once this has been obtained I am looking to apply to the RICS to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor which will progress my career and provide me with plenty of skills. Along with this there is also a variety of CDP that is available to you.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say that the programme is generally good. There is a good company culture and it is easy to get along with everyone. There can be times where you are less busy and have to use your own initiative to keep yourself busy. I do think the programme could be improved by getting the apprentices exposed to more projects which would help gain a better understanding of the industry and the job. Overall, I have enjoyed my time here and would definitely recommend it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly well organised. The training I received was very good and and I think the only improvement would be for a mentor/apprentice manager to keep more in touch and have regular meetings so it is easy to identify any problems. Often it can feel daunting speaking to the managers to raise a problem/concern.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employer can vary. Sometimes they can be really helpful asking how University is and if you're struggling but overall they are supportive. I think further consideration could be given to apprentices to ensure that they are doing ok and enjoying the job role.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel that the training provider (ARU) have been generally poor. The standard of tutors can be dreadful along with the content produced in the lectures/activities. I feel the training provider could be improved massively which when speaking to other students they also feel the same. The training provider's organisation has been woeful. They have forgot to tell us numerous pieces of vital information such as "MyShowcase" which as a result I have had to recall 3 years worth of information to make a diary in order to pass the course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not believe that the Degree qualification as of yet has not made me perform better in my role. The context of the degree is very basic and the theory does not always come into my current role. However, it does expose you to other areas of the industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately due to COVID, I think this has been stalled. However, the company do encourage you to take part in Volunteering. I think this may change once restrictions have been lifted but geographically it is difficult for me as I live over an hour a way to the office.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Morgan Sindall to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall, it is a good company that provides a good environment as an apprentice. There are also good progression routes which can be seen by other employees and the general feel of the business is good. There is also opportunity to review your job internally after the rotation programme which is very useful.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Sindall?
  • For any applicants I would suggest trying to apply for work experience. Usually this is really easy to organise as there is a variety in offices, roles and sites around the country. This provides an opportunity for you to get your foot in the door and make a good impression which will definitely help in the application process.
