  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role in the Co-op is Team Leader. I am leading a team of about 10 Customer team members. I am ensuring the store is safe, legal and enjoyable for our customers. Providing a safe and tidy environment in the store. Stock management, safe and secure, cash control, coaching and leading team and more.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship i developed my communication and leadership skills a lot. I am more successful communicating with members of staff and I understand much more about how to motivate them, help them overcome learning barrier, adapt my leadership style according to my team (and individual's) needs. This is a big progress for me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot. I get to know a lot of new people and learned a lot. Bit shame that all the sessions are remote due to Covid-19 restriction, would be even better meeting the team of apprentices in person, doing group exercises old way and engaging more with them.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There was some disruptions, miscommunication and mistakes, but in general it is well organised. I think if not the 'unexpected' Christmas break (4 weeks) it would go more smoothly and we wouldn't be so behind with the programme. I believe it wasn't learning provider's fault just the co-ops.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I don't see much support from my employer. I received few generic emails from my employer, however apart from giving me learning day I don't see any support. I wish area manager would be more involved or maybe some people from head office could reach out to offer some placements, engage us in projects, etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider just provides training. I receive a lot of support from the store manager and my coach. I feel really grateful for all they helped me with during my apprenticeship, if not for them I wouldn't even be halfway there yet. They motivate and support me since day one.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think i already improved a lot. Not only my assessment writing skills got better, I am more aware of my learning and development needs, I am more self aware and more knowledgeable. My communication and leadership skills already improved (there is still a lot of work ahead of me) and I am really proud of what I achieved so far.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not much is possible at the moment, mainly due to Covid 19 restrictions. I don't think it will be possible in nearest future, however I know that the team is already planning get together when Covid restriction will be eased off. I hope we will be able to do some team building day out together.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Co-op to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • I don't want to disclose that. As a shop I would recommend. As place of work, not so much.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Co-op?
  • If you willing to progress it would be much easier resigning, leaving and applying as external candidate, more chances to get promotion than just trying as internal candidate. Be yourself, be honest and mention Ways of being coop. It is a big thing and would help you get some extra points on interview.
