Maintenance engineer Review

Looking after and maintaining machinery and other systems within a factory environment. This involves lots of preventative maintenance as well as corrective fixes. Throughout the days we are mainly on call, prepared for any issues that may surface where we must get to them and fix them as soon as possible.

For the first year of my apprenticeship it was primarily based in a training centre. Here we learned lots of skills that are essential to the job we do now. Hand fitting skills, working with PLCs, robots and lots of other things. This gave us a good set of skills that we can further hone on site

I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship currently. We have had a bit of turbulence with thr company attempting to change our job role completely in the middle of our training. This how ever never came to fruition and I am back to doing the work that I enjoy. I thoroughly enjoyed the training centre and learning lots of skills

The programme has had little to no organisation put in to it. The training centre aspect was well planned but this was done by a third party company. When in plant you seem to just be passed around different people until you finally get somewhere. We often found ourselves turning up on site to find our "managers" had no idea who we even were.

I belive there is a strong support network within the company however I have never had to personally use it. Depending on your supervisor it can sometimes be hard to speak to them. You just have to get lucky with who you work with. For me personally I have had no issues.

As I am only in my second year I have only had the experience of my full time level 2 NVQ. At the training centre we recieved lots of support and felt like we could really get help if we needed it. At the moment we rarely get to see our training managers as they are based off site

I feel that the qualification and experience we recieves in our first year of the apprenticeship has been vital. It may have only given us basic knowledge of lots of different types of manufacturing skills but when we got into our job roles we were able to develop and strengthen those basics without having to start from scratch in a high speed environment.

At the moment due to covid there is nothing like this that I can think of. During normal times they offered a colleague training scheme where a group of employees could apply to recieve money for things like team building exercises or outside training that were not being offered in house.

Jaguar land rover have many ups and downs. As a provider of an apprenticeship they are lacking in organisation heavily and there seems to be little training that you get put on to. This could be down to factors in your local area but I am not too sure. For saying they have a fully fledged apprenticeship team there is little to no contact since you come into the factory. It seems to be as soon as you come Into plant you arent our problem anymore and that is a poor attitude. For the work you do the pay would be hard to best and on your apprenticeship you normally recieve a 10% pay rise every 6 months depending on behavioral factors. Overall I believe it is a good company to work for, the apprenticeship team however needs to be more active and integrated with the apprentices.

For the work you do the money can't be bested. However the company has a very much old time approach to manufacturing. At least compared to some of the approaches you see in other automotive companies. If you come into it thinking that JLR is a prestigious company you will be sorely disappointed. As for advise come into expecting very little
