  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role on a day to day basis is about servicing my portfolio of corporate customers. This can vary from completing a bank mandate to updating their security contact list for BACS. We also deal with urgent issues such as payment referrals and refer clients to the correct servicing channels when they need help with queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to confidently speak to clients especially when we have to have difficult conversations with the client. I have continued to develop my product knowledge within the bank and our role has recently changed. This has meant we are required to write level 1 credit papers and so we have had to start a credit training course so that we are accredited.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the process of progressing from a Client Service Executive to a Relationship Support Manager, now known as an Associate Banker. I have been very lucky to be offered this promotion as part of the scheme as it has taken some people years to progress into the role I am in now. I have gained a lot of work experience which looks great on my CV.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Regarding the degree side of my apprenticeship it has been extremely organized and structured which has been great. We have been provided with clear dates of the three year course which have been stuck to. I have felt slightly let down regarding the internal apprenticeship team within Barclays especially as we role off into a permanent role. It has been slightly chaotic with dates being moved and a lack of communication.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have had great support from my line manager in both roles on the scheme. They have been very supportive and have always understood that my study day and degree are just as important as the work I am doing for them. I have found the apprenticeship team within Barclays to be less supportive due to the lack of communication we receive from them. However if there is urgent support required they will help us if we reach out to them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive great support from LIBF when working towards qualifications. We have had regular meetings and one to ones to discuss my progress and how am I performing in my studies. There was a slight lack of support when transitioning from study weeks at LIBF to working from home, however they listened to our feedback and adjusted this accordingly.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The topics we study as part of the degree link well with the role and the work that we do in banking. We have covered topics such as leadership, risk and relationship management which has allowed us to perform better in our role as we have a deeper understanding of the subjects.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is. As part of my team I have become part of the TMT social committee helping organize virtual events for our team. There have also been several calls that we can join and listen to such as the WIN committee. I would say there is not a lot of sports teams and activities that we can get involved in but I know they are out there in Barclays if you want to find them.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Barclays to a friend because I do feel that they are a supportive company that has really shown a concern for wellbeing especially during the recent pandemic. I have been able to reach out to my manager when i have been struggling and also used the counselling via AXA through Barclays.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • I would say do not be nervous if you do not have all the knowledge around products and processes these can be taught and learnt whilst on the job. It is important to show that you understand the Barclays values and that you can be part of a team supporting your colleagues. They look for hardworking people with drive and a willingness to learn.
