  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to support the user base within our company for their hardware and software requirements. It is also to support them with any queries or issues they have from second line escalations. It is also to maintain and improve the onsite infrastructure of our IT systems to best suit internal users and external client needs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The simple answer is yes, many. I was fresh out of school when I started with limited knowledge of the industry from my school subjects. Since joining I have developed into a professional within the sector be it in terms of interacting with others and how best to tackle difficult situations or technical skills such as calendar permissions, setups and groupings or how best to go about troubleshooting an issue.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My program has been a great one for me. I have enjoyed the different aspects of it and the variety that it brings. The team environment has also been very valued to me, they have all made me feel very welcome and there is a great atmosphere amongst us all.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There was a clear structure and plan made out to me of what to expect and the way in which the programme was going to advance. Throughout it I was provided with ample support and time to take to study as well as clearly outlined work from the training provider when it came to courses and training schedules.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager has been a massive supporter of me throughout my programme and has been invaluable to my development, always making time to sit down and go through things with me where possible. This is not to say that the rest of the team have not also been great because they have! There's a wealth of knowledge within our team network.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Unfortunately during my program, I had to change my assessor but once this happened I cannot fault the support provided. Deadlines were manageable for work to be submitted and support was always on hand through email at any time that it was needed. They provided as much of a stress free environment as possible.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In my opinion, the experienced gained through the practical side of the programme was equal, if not possibly more valuable to helping me perform better in my role. However these skills are likely derived from the knowledge gained in the courses and training provided by the training provider so in that respect this has helped massively with my development.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many to do at this company. Unfortunately the Pandemic has put pay to most of these recently but before that I had enjoyed the 5-a-side tournaments with people from outside my own team as well as Pool tournaments and FIFA tournaments. These provide a great opportunity to meet and speak to others in the company.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barnett Waddingham to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The atmosphere within the company is one of a professional environment that is also very accepting and a good place to start a career with a lot of opportunity for progression. Its also a very varied company, there are lots of different practice areas that you can choose to work in, say for instance you didn't like your initial choice.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barnett Waddingham?
  • Be yourself. Don't fell stressed and that you have to create some fake impression of yourself to make you look good. As mentioned previously, they are a very accepting company to work for. They understand that people may take time and development to flourish in their roles but they are willing to put that investment into their people.
