  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day activities include assisting around the workplace and getting involved with engineering activities. This includes testing, problem solving, and project management. Additionally, I am working towards a level 4 NVQ as part of the apprenticeship scheme and therefore gathering evidence to contribute towards this is also a part of my activities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to develop many skills during my apprenticeship. The main skills that I have developed are team-working, leadership and self-confidence. Other skills that are unique to the workplace are also developed. This includes testing specific hardware and software, locating faults within these assets, and making the necessary corrections.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the programme and I think that it has been very beneficial to me as both an employee and as an individual. Each time I move departments, I am learning new things and this keeps the programme interesting as well as maintaining an atmosphere that challenges and pushes me to try new approaches to problems.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When I first started my apprenticeship, I was issued a time table that showed how long I would be staying in each department, though this is more flexible than I thought as I have spent longer in some departments than in others. This has allowed me to develop some skills more than others.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • When working on the shop floor, there are always people around you who are capable of assisting you with whatever it is that you are working on. The support is all around you and therefore when encountering a problem, it is easy to resolve it by asking co-workers and other apprentices.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Similarly to the previous question, I receive enough support to allow me to progress without telling me the answers directly therefore encouraging me to use the knowledge that I have attained and use it to solve the questions that I have been set or the task that I have been assigned.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My training allows me to take a new perspective when dealing with problems and tasks that I am set. This works to my benefit as having multiple perspectives to consider (such as health and safety, financial, developmental, etc) enable me to create a better solution and therefore a better overall product.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many events over the year that allow for employees to connect with the business or to relax or to enjoy a sport for the afternoon. There are weekly matches of 5-a-Side football which is the most common activity. However there are also more infrequent and bigger events such as days taken to improve team building.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Siemens to a friend as it is a well respected company that has an in-depth understanding of the people who they employ and work with to ensure that apprentices have an understanding of how the company operates. They provide many opportunities for higher education as well as having a welcoming environment that allows newcomers to settle in quickly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • I would suggest making your application stand out as much as possible, ensuring that the interviewer remembers your application and your face puts you in good standing. When applying online, ensure that your answer to questions are concise yet contain enough information to satisfy the person reading it without boring them.
