Apprentice Electrical Engineer Review

My day to day life is constantly changing. I am constantly learning new skills by doing rotations throughout the business. Currently I am working with the Control Engineering team so my day to day life it working with relays, configuring them and testing. However this will change again in the coming months.

Absolutely. The job we do at Siemens is completely different to anything I'd ever seen before and has given me a chance to develop my knowledge of the industry as well as what we do at Siemens. It also has allowed me to learn about all aspects of the business even outside of engineering.

So far I have really enjoyed my programme, it has been seriously tough joining a team during COVID-19, missing out on meeting people and trying to work remotely and distanced for a hands on job has been tough, especially for learning. But overall it has still been enjoyable and can only get better from here.

So far it has been organised extremely well. Thanks mainly to my line manager who has been sorting my rotations throughout the business keeping me on track to give me a wide range of knowledge of how each team works and how they collaborate on projects together as one big team.

I receive constant support from my employer, it fills me with confidence knowing that someone is constantly there to pick up the phone to support me if I require any. This can be from work support, college support or just someone to have a chat with if I have any concerns with anything.

We have regular catch ups with our training provider as well as including our apprenticeship organiser from siemens to catch up, check my progress and raise any concerns that I have. This is a great way for the company and the provider to check on my progress and provide feedback to both parties.

What we do at work is extremely specific, and it is extremely hard to find a course directly aimed at it as it is a niche industry. However the course does allow me to learn basic principles of electrical engineering that we sometimes do use in our day to day life at work.

With COVID 19 this has been a very hard to do any extra curricular activities. Work have planned some days out if the lockdown rules allow for it but I don't think that it is fair to mark down the company for this as there is nothing they can do.

Siemens is a great place to work. It is a international company with vast experience and some extremely knowledgeable staff. It is the perfect place to learn from the best people in the industry and has wide opportunity to develop further through the business as well as into different roles.

Be yourself and be confident, siemens don't just look for good grades. They look for someone who is themselves and is confident and shows potential to grow as a person. You must be able to work as a team and be adaptable across teams for your rotation throughout the business.
