  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves identifying opportunities for process automation within Unilever, as well as implementing and maintaining automation solutions to deliver cost savings for the business. My day-to-day role involves collaboration with development teams to ensure that projects are on track, as well as providing technical support to troubleshoot any issues which may arise.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The two main skills I have gained so far are technical knowledge of automation processes, alongside developing my Excel skills. Developing my Excel skills has allowed me to work more effectively with data, with data mapping and visualisation being a core part of my role. Ultimately, the robots our team develop provide data back to the business, which needs to be visualised in a digestible way.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am very much enjoying my programme so far. Doing a degree apprenticeship has meant that I am gaining practical workplace experience, alongside studying for my degree through the Open University. Having been out of the education system for several years, coming back to academia has been an enjoyable challenge, and is also allowing me to expand my knowledge base in other areas outside of my day-to-day role

  • My programme is very well structured. The course materials and modules are allowing me to build a solid knowledge base, whilst the regular coursework assignments and deadlines are ensuring that I take accountability for my learning and can learn at a healthy pace. The course itself is 4 years long, allowing opportunity for development and improvement.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive very good support from my line manager and employer. I am allowed my 20% off-the-job time to study and complete my university assignments. My line manager is very supportive of me, my day-to-day work and my university learning, as well as my professional development - finding the right areas within the business to challenge and grow me within my role.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive very good support from my training provider, The Open University. I have a dedicated tutor for each module, with every tutor holding regular tutorials to provide guidance and support on the university assignments. On top of this, I am also able to email my tutors if I have any further questions about an assignment.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Through my university assignments, I am broadening my overall knowledge of the I.T industry. Certain modules are also directly linked to my day-to-day role, which helps me contextualise my learning through practical application in the workplace. Overall, having this mix of academic knowledge and practical experience will give me a more rounded skill set as an I.T professional.
