  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The Apprenticeship includes lots of hands on maintenance and installation of HV electrical equipment up to 400Kv, about half of the 3 years is dedicated to training courses including city and guilds and practical training skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills from basic hand skills and fabrication tools, to MEWP licenses allowing me to progress my career wherever it takes me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program very much and have made many new friends, however staying away from home for a year and a half on and off is hard and strains relationships and friendships but more will be made along the way.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is well structured and has been the same for years gone by, due to the COVID 19 pandemic it was put on hold and it was a struggle to restart and get back on target with training but was doable.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a large amount of support on a local level from colleagues or line managers, less support comes from the training staff however.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • In the first year a large amount of support was given however this has since dropped to a near non-existent level, almost left to struggle on out own with no replies or acknowledgement.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification I received has helped my massively in my practical role however a year after completing it I am still waiting on my official certificates, and cant progress without them.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra activities to get involved with such as running and step challenges, colleague relationships are highly upkept and people meet up on weekends to perform activities such as group exercise, football and outdoor sports.

  • 9a. Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • National Grid is a very good company to work for they specialize in so many areas of engineering and are constantly adapting to the changing world. Get involved you don't want to miss out.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • When applying its a good idea to know how national grid operates and runs the structure of the company is important also there are many procedures to follow such as the 8 main Safety Rules
