  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am part of a technology team that provides applications and services to handle large volumes of data coming in from clients and how to ensure our systems can be reliable to process it. Day-to-day I help to answer questions from our users on our application and help them to resolve the issue. Parts of my day also involve developing my technical skills through coding various tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my existing skills through internal sessions to enhance confident speaking and presentation skills. Every day at work I am improving my team work skills by working with a range of experienced colleagues, each with unique working styles. This has helped me start developing my own efficient working style. I have also learnt many new skills such as; writing programs in Java and ReactJS, implementing the SDLC first-hand and applying theory learnt in lectures to real projects at work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have truly enjoyed the program as not only have I become a well rounded skilled software engineer but also GS has helped build my confidence through unyielding support and investment into my future. The multitude training sessions and events which were organised for us gave me the kick start to the professional industry which helped throughout my four years. Furthermore integration into my team has been great as everyone is supportive and willing to answer any questions I have, and guide me with valuable feedback.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During the final year changing the structure of working 2 days at work and 3 days at university with one being for dissertation only was helpful in staying on track at work and being able to project on the final year project. Again the support and flexibility GS gave on this was extremely helpful in times where there were multiple deadlines.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The weekly meetings with my supervisor were beneficial as we could discuss any current worries or issues regarding the final year project and how the qualification aligns with it. My supervisor was great in supporting any queries I had regarding the final assessment and ensured that I was well prepared.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Very well as the the lecturers and supervisors are experts in their field and have an abundance of knowledge and tools to support all learning styles. The supervisor is great in challenging our approaches to the work so that we can apply all the skills we have learnt either at work or university.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes! At Goldman Sachs there is a universal charity day which helps us get hands on in giving back to our communities - this is a great team event where can meet colleagues in all different divisions and teams. There are sports teams at GS which can be joined such as netball and basketball which is a great way to bond out of the office environment.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Goldman Sachs to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend Goldman Sachs to friends because of its people and their ethos. Every person you meet is so friendly, encouraging and supportive of this program and they just want to help each other to grow. Initially, it is daunting knowing little about the industry and business but the immense amount of learning resources, both the people and documentation within the firm, helps you to understand it in no time. I would recommend Goldman Sachs because the employees are experts in their fields and so you would have the best quality advice and guidance. Also work life becomes much more interesting when working with such diversity around you, as you learn new things about different cultures that you may never have known.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Goldman Sachs?
  • Be yourself! Goldman Sachs values people’s individualities and unique skill sets and so by bringing something different to the team but having the same values and ethics that the firm holds, is a great starting point. Show that you have the technical skills, also show that you have the social skills too as the firm encourages networking and being able to easily work next to different people and teams easily.
