  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily role involves snagging and desnagging apartments and corridors to ensure they are ready ahead of client inspection making sure the works are done to a high quality and in line with the specification. I also walk the block ensuring health and safety standards are the main focus of the operatives and supervisors.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • With regard to my programme, the induction and training processes are very well organised. All site team members are happy to assist me whenever I need their help and are good mentors. The uni side of the programme is well organised as it is all online so the structure is preset.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • With the uni course being solely online you are not able to verbally ask questions directly to a tutor. There is however, a simple forum process in which you just upload your question and receive an answer within a number of hours which is very beneficial as you can read the questions and answers of fellow students.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do find that the knowledge that I am learning from the course does cover over into my day to day work. To give an example, I can use my knowledge from my Quantity Surveying module to enhance my understanding of sending instructions on site with regard to various works.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As to be expected, social events have been limited within the current C-19 pandemic. Previously, lots of social events were held within the project team and larger, company wide events. The project also gets involved with the local communities and schools to create a better lasting impression of the construction industry.

  • 9a. Would you recommend John Sisk & Sons to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • In my opinion, John Sisk and Sons have both a strong apprenticeship and graduate programme so they are well equipped for training people that are new to construction work. They definitely put a big focus on the familial feel of the business and really prioritise the wellbeing of their staff.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk & Sons?
  • I feel like the best advice I could give is just to be yourself. Confidence and communication skills are both essential to the role so be sure to portray these in your application and interview. Be sure that you want to commit to the studying aspect as the course may take a few years to complete.
