  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently working on the HS2 as part of a GI team, which involves the management of numerous subcontractors and communication of designers. For this placement the on site experience comes from site walkovers etc. In order to get a good idea of the 20km site we are working on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt and developed many skills during this apprenticeship when considering I did not have much knowledge of Civil Engineering prior to starting. Some notable skills/knowledge I believe I have gained include communication (on many levels), organisation, understanding of health and safety and a lot of technical knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme so far, as I believe it is very well set up and having college blocks means you are able to focus the education and site placement of the apprenticeship separately. The project I have been put on is also very interesting and has given me a lot of exposure to engineering

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured with clear college blocks and site placements. the only slight issue I had is that I would've liked to know the location of my site earlier.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Had a lot of support at college whilst working towards the first year of level 4, the college tutors were always available and willing to help. For the KSB section of the qualification, the assessor I have is also very responsive and always deals with any issues I have.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • From my experience it seems to be a very well structured company, that provides you a lot of support and some option in what type of work you want to be involved in, allowing you to get relevant experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • Ensure that you are very open minded when starting this apprenticeship as a lot of travelling may be required, however it is necessary in order to gain the best experience possible. When at college time management is a must because you will enjoy yourself much more if you allow yourself to always be ahead and not stressed.
