  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I move in rotations between different teams but generally the role involves some coding. This can be as simple as using SQL and VBA or as complicated as using Java or C. I have spent some time doing data analysis as well, mainly using Excel or microstrategy. I am also responsible for presenting the work I have done in meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to code. This includes being sent on a course to learn how to use VBA properly. Through the university lectures nd coursework, I have learned to code in Python, C++ and Java as well. I have used SQL a lot within my role so I have developed my skills there as well.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the work culture as everyone is welcoming and have been really helpful. The other apprentices are also very approachable and friendly so it has made it easier to integrate into the work place. The company is diverse and inclusive which makes the office a lot livelier and allows me to meet many different kinds of people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship within Santander has been very well structured and planned. Regarding NTU, sometimes there are slight breakdowns in communication, or there seems to be a lack of pre-planning but it has not ended up majorly affecting anyone and has normally been resolved pretty promptly. Overall, I feel it is organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is always supportive and they try to make sure that we are never burdened by too much at one time. They communicate with us regularly to make sure that the workload is manageable and they make sure to take our feedback to the university as well. Overall I feel like they are very supportive.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Sometimes the training provider is late regarding the support they provide. This has caused a bunch of delays for us during our coursework as we have to wait for a response that sometimes takes too long before we can progress with a project eating into our deadlines and increasing the stress on us.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like the structured study is very useful as it provides another viewpoint on the same topic. For example, when learning SQL through structured study at my training provider, it filled in many gaps of knowledge that I did not realise that I had when I learned how to code in SQL at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My company has many different activities through work that we can take part inn. This includes charity adn outreach projects, as well as support groups and events that you can attend. The range of options are diverse and allow for one to get involved as long as they wish to.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Santander to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I really enjoy the work culture and the support that we have been given from the company. In addition, my colleagues are all amazing people, and they all enjoy and are passionate towards their jobs as well as being good teachers. All in all, it is a place that I enjoy working in and would not hesitate to recommend.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Santander?
  • Take your time researching the company and the locations that you could be asked to work in. Make sure you come into the interview knowing what role you're applying for and ready and willing to speak about the experiences you have mentioned on your CV. Also, make sure to show your passion for the job and the reasons why you'd be a good employee.
