  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Data Scientist I am required to manage and clean data with the occasional project involving machine learning and Artificial intelligence. I mostly work with Oracle and Snowflake data bases and primarily make use of python programming language. I have also had some projects with exposure to Amazon web services.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt to work in an Agile environment with kanban methodology but also how the applications of data science are imperative in the tourism industry. I have solidified skills with the use of python but also developed skills in how to use BI tools such as spotfire and tableau

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the University Learning side of things. I was already knowledgable in Data Science techniques however the degree apprenticeship has further bolstered the foundation I had together with given me additional tips and tricks that I have been fortunate enough to use in my day to day activities with a team that encourages their use. We also get study days to sharpen our skills and work towards university assignments. Good programme overall

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I wouldnt say it is well organised as it has been a new addition to TUIs data science team. Perhaps this is also a case of personal circumstance as well since I knew most of the content and didnt need to dedicate that much time to studies. So I found myself not have a set schedule of study days etc from the business side. In terms of the actual degree it is well structured giving a strong foundation but could do with teaching more modern techniques that can actually be used in real life

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Unfortunately from a learning perspective there are not many well experienced Data Scientists in TUI so most of the initiative would have to be of your own accord. We do get support in terms of time to dedicate towards the degree and that helps with figuring things out for yourself.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider has been supportive however unfortunately due to covid and things moving online it became difficult to get one to one attention. Although this might be personal circumstance knowing some of the content beforehand that I knew which questions exactly to ask to which they responded via email/teams fairly quickly. If you are uncertain on the content then you will struggle.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Most of the content we learn is not applicable to our industry however you do develop skills in how to formulate problems in a Data Science context where other algorithms and practices might be of relevance. So as such if you have already been doing this and have been good at it, it doesn't help much other than give you the credibility of being a Data Scientist

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are plently of team building and pub lunches that are organised although not during Covid times. I am sure they will return. TUI is indeed very good at taking care of their employees and this can be considered a given. I recall having gone to a ziplining team building day which was quite fun indeed

  • 9a. Would you recommend TUI UK & Ireland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company is quite good at taking care of their employees. I joined having been interested in a Data Science degree which I was then quickly given the opportunity to partake in. But its not just this we get to take advantage of their bi-annual team building and community service events to make friends and enjoy the day. There is also good perks on getting concessions and discounts to travel

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to TUI UK & Ireland?
  • One thing would definitely be to show your enthusiasm about Data Science but another would be to show your knowledge and ability to apply what you know to the problems we have. It doesn't matter if your solution is bulletproof or not it matters that you have the ability to phrase a problem in a fashion where something can be done to solve it.
