  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The first year of the apprenticeship is spent at Airbus's Training Provider Coleg Cambria. Here you begin academic study of Level 3 Aeronautical Engineering alongside developing practical hands on experience as you work towards a Level 2 NVQ in the same subject before entering the factory in year 2.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Coming from a retail management background I had no engineering skills whatsoever. That said, from the very first day up until now, I learn new skills every day. From use of tooling, understanding drawings to applying myself daily to achieve targets and deadlines that are set by both college and employer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Extremely enjoy the programme, I only wish I had done it sooner! As you would expect with studying Aeronautical Engineering it is not easy, but so long you apply yourself and enjoy the challenge you develop a passion for success. Assessors are helpful and all Airbus staff are polite and helpful every step of the way.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as you need. In my experience Airbus as an employer can offer much more that just academic support and are always on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have. The Early Careers Team have a wealth of knowledge; as most have been an apprentice before and are always polite, friendly and informative.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again as much as you need. College lecturers provide all the resources required for you to succeed and if at anytime you find yourself confused or not sure about something, they are always happy to support and help in any way they can. Communication is always efficient and feedback is consistent.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification provides the understanding of why you are asked to do something and the importance of complying within the Aerospace Industry. It provides you with the skills and knowledge to perform your role effectively and safely whilst also giving you a wide spectrum of engineering study to which you can take with you to further develop your career down the line.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Airbus has a proactive approach to extra-curricular activities from Social Events, Trips, Sports, Gaming and more. This is great way of being able to network and meet other people from other departments. It also allows individuals to develop their fitness and confidence in a fun and social environment.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Airbus to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Airbus provides you with an Engineering Qualification amongst many others during the apprenticeship. A company who continually invests and respects their employees is a company worth working for. Airbus provides a healthy work life balance, a rewarding career, opportunities to develop and are renowned for their innovation and high standards of product. There's something special about being part of the - We Make It Fly - team at Airbus.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Airbus?
  • Take your time and do not rush the application process. Thoroughly revise for any tests that are required and prepare effectively for interviews. Be aware that the course is challenging in parts, but do not be afraid to come out of your comfort zone because there are heaps of help on hand including your colleagues who are in the same boat. Entering an engineering environment can be overwhelming, yet very rewarding - but from personal experience I have enjoyed every second of it and only wish I had done it sooner!
