  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I attend college to learn the theory behind what we do on the plant, college also provides me to improve my hand skills. Whilst on site I could be doing a range of things like changing pump seals, overhauling machines and equipment or completing online training to develop my engineering skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My apprenticeship has allowed me the opportunity to develop myself and my career. I learn something new every day, not just from being at college, but from the people on site who are always happy to share their knowledge and experiences. Everyday is a learning opportunity, and allows me the opportunity to become confident in my chosen role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am very much enjoying my program. I have been welcomed as a member of the team. The role is both physically and mentally challenge, which provides me with a nice mix. The program has also encouraged me to work on my skills on my own time, again making me more confident.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • GSK has been great at organising my program, however, the same can not be said for the college which we have been attending. Due to covid things have not run as smoothly as they may have in previous years, which has led to a lot of confusion and miscommunication as to how the college is running things.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer and team leader have been very supportive. I have also been appointed a mentor on site, who is my point of contact whenever I need advice or just want a chat and a coffee. I feel very comfortable approaching my line manager, who is always happy to help as much as he can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The lecturers are great, although the college its self is a bit unorganized the lecturers/trainers are always happy to help. They never make me feel like any question is too silly and take the time to explain something in a way that I can understand. On top of that I gain a lot of support from the people on site.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification makes me really question what, why and how I am doing something, which allows me to gain a wider understanding of my role. The theory aspect provides me with the knowledge of how things work and why we do things a certain way, whilst the practical aspect shows me how to apply the theory effectively in real time.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • During the covid pandemic, social activities have been very limited, however, GSK have created a great online networking system that includes quizzes, coffee mornings and general get togethers. Ensuring all apprentices don't become isolated and are still able to extend their network when working from home. We are also encouraged to participate in STEM events which again allows our network to grow.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • GSK has been the best career move I have made. There are always people around to support and guide you. They encourage you to develop not just in your career but also as an individual. They are a company living their values and who want to help not just their customers but also their employees.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • Enjoy the experience. Know about the company, but most importantly about yourself. Know what drives and motivates you, what makes you want to get up in the morning, because passion is vital. Also remember that the people you meet in your recruitment process have most likely started as an apprentice and know how it feels to be sitting where you are, so they just want to make it as enjoyable and worth while as they can.
