  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a 3rd year Maintenance technician means that I am involved with maintenance engineers who are teaching me the skills that i require in order to find and fix issues that i will face in my role. hands on experiences in the workplace allow for a better understanding of the job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Starting with very little skills that i required to become a maintenance engineer in the 1st year i was taught the basics of which i have been able to build upon throughout the 2nd year and now into a more in-depth level in my 3rd year. the skills required to be an effective maintenance engineer are always advancing requiring development to be undertaken throughout my carrier.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been structured in a way that has allowed for me to learn new skills and expand on them in a manufacturing environment, which is an essential step that is taken between the 1st and 2nd year of the apprenticeship. the 3rd year of the apprenticeship allows for a deeper understanding of the skills already gained.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured in terms of allowing me to progress the skills that i have gained in a logical order instead of being thrown in at the deep end. improvements are being made as to changes in the programme that will allow for apprentices to focus skills onto certain areas sooner the the apprenticeship, which i believe is a great move to allow for a better understanding before starting shift work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have not required much support from my employer as an apprentice, however if i did feel like i needed support with either personal circumstances, educational issues or work issues i would be able to see them and be able to work out a solution that will allow for my problems to be resolved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The first year of the apprenticeship programme allowed for a smooth understanding of the topics and was easy to complete alongside work completed down in the workshop. the second year of the apprenticeship was slightly harder because of now being placed in technologies around the plant meaning a higher workload from the company, but support was given where needed. starting the 3rd year the HNC programme that is now on site we had very little support and a lot of confusion leading to high levels of stress for all apprentices that although expressed was never truly understood. the HNC course has started to improve but requires ALOT more improvement to make the work between the company and training manageable.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Currently i am doing a level 4 HNC qualification having completed my level 3. i would say that the qualification does have some relevance to the job role i am going into however could definitely be improved so that there was a better connection between the content and the job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There have been many activities to get involved in at work, with support also being given if there is a certain activity that you are looking to set up. examples include a newsletter team, carnival car and sports teams. activities are commonly advertised on screens around work so you can always be aware of what's going on.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • BMW Group as a whole is able to give experiences and learning opportunities that would not be available at many other companies, allowing for a great experience to be gained that allows for a great portfolio to be built for your working carrier. The training in terms of qualifications is also another major benefit towards a portfolio


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • When coming into the apprenticeship at BMW Group you must take every opportunity that is offered to you in order to gain the most from it. being hungry for all the training and experiences that are offered to you usually leads to even more chances to improve yourself in big ways, so always have a open mind and hungry attitude.
