  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The first year is split into theory and practical-based learning. On Mondays, we are in the classroom learning the theory for the BTEC and for the rest of the day we are in the workshop, completing the practical side of the course. Topics include maths, electrical, handfitting, milling, turning, fluid power and PLCs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have greatly developed my existing knowledge of maths, electrical and engineering sciences and gained a lot of new skills from the practical side such as machining, welding, understanding fluid power systems, networks and electronics. This has all been in the first year and looking forward to developing these further in the coming years of the apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I was not completely sure what to expect when I started the apprenticeship but I am very glad to have applied and taken this route because it has provided me with a wide range of experience, skills and knowledge about the industry. I am enjoying the programme and delivery very much.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Generally, I feel the programme is well structured and organised and when there have been disruptions such as the pandemic this year, the tutors and department have been flexible and able to change the plans to ensure the programme is delivered seamlessly. Tutors are helpful and easy to reach by e-mail or in the office.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is plenty of support from the employer and you are looked after well by them. They are easy to reach and friendly; any concerns are noted and taken seriously. Some improvements could be made such as information about who to approach about specific issues could be made clearer such as by putting up a noticeboard.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider and tutors have been excellent. They are friendly, knowledgeable and supportive about any issues you are having. Assignments are given out with plenty of time to complete and tutors are easy to reach for any helop. We have regular reviews to ensure nobody is falling behind and raise any concerns.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am not entirely certain about this since I am only completing the first year currently and have only been in the training school, instead of out on the plant. However, I do believe all of the skills and knowledge gained will be very beneficial once we are out on our work placements in the following years.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra-curricular activities available to get involved in such as going to skern lodge at the start of the year, charity events, apprentice newsletters, mountain challenges, social events and projects. However, due to the pandemic this year, most of these have been cancelled but should be back next year and I am looking forward to it then.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BMW to my friends because it is a global and reputable company so it is a no-brainer for anyone interested in automotive, future technology and engineering. The staff are friendly and supportive including the managers and tutors so I would definitely recommend this employer to my friend.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • I would advice applicants to be confident and have a good think about why you are applying and where the apprenticeship fits in with your future goals and aspirations. This should help you write and perform better in the application process. Other than that, do not worry too much about it.
