  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a HR Data Analyst, my work involves extracting and transforming data in order to produce insights for the BBC. My day is split between building reports, project work and quantitative analysis of our staff and other HR/Finance data. From the start of my work at the BBC, I have been able to get involved in large projects and have been given responsibility for specific areas of analysis within the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through my apprenticeship, I have developed both hard and soft skills. Hard skills include learning Python, Linux and some aws in a data science context, learning statistical methods, and understanding big data processes. Soft skills include communication, teamwork and project management.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme and believe that it has set me up with the skills I need to do my job effectively, whilst also setting me up to advance in my career. The skills I have learnt are extremely useful for the types of roles I am looking to work in in the future.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured. I engage in a sprint course at QMUL, my learning provider for 2 weeks at a time, and then engage in coursework and on the job learning through work based modules. The structure is rigid enough to provide me with the learning I need from my learning provider, whilst also being relaxed enough to allow me to engage in my on the job learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has been very supportive during the whole process. My course expects me to take time in order to complete my learning and examinations, and my managers and colleagues have been very open to this being led by me in terms of if time off is needed in relation to the course, then it is given. My team also take an active interest in what I do and have laid out a framework for my progression beyond the course, which is really positive and exciting.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has been supportive, especially given the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not being able to attend out lectures in person for the last 2 semesters due to social distancing, and sitting exams online has been an interesting experience, however QMUL has been able to provide the resources to make it possible to engage in the course and progress through the learning process.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The learning that I have done will be really useful in taking the BBC to the next level in a data science context. My skills are unique within my team in terms of programming languages, and I am able to see where these skills will be able to be deployed in a work context.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My team has a Thursday night football session that I often go along to, and my team also makes sure that we engage in regular zoom catch-up calls to ensure that communication and relationships can be built. Once the pandemic is over, we have plans to go to some face to face social events, as well as continuing to hold conferences to build team morale and discuss the teams future projects.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The BBC is a really friendly place to work, colleagues are really inclusive and have a wealth of experience to draw from. The BBC is a well renowned institution, and the work that I have been able to engage in has made me really proud to work there, knowing that the work that I am doing is making a real difference - whether through tackling gender-pay gap, or working with auditors to ensure that the BBC is being held properly accountable. The workplace is really open and friendly, and seeing the occasional celebrity has its perks too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • I would recommend that anyone applying to the BBC focused on letting their true personality shine through - be passionate about what you want to work with and be able to demonstrate how you have pursued this or taken an active interest in this prior to starting. I would also encourage people to broaden their idea of what the BBC does - initially I thought that the BBC only had broadcasting related jobs, when in reality there are all types of roles, from HR to bee keepers.
