  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an Engineering Degree Apprentice includes working on a real-life engineering project for 4 days of the week, with a single day (day differs depending on year of apprenticeship) release to University. I have a daily morning meeting with my team to check in with each other and see if there are any blockers, then I am allocated tasks for what I will be working on for that day. Due to current restrictions, all of these interactions are done over Microsoft Teams. I usually have interactions with my team leader, and other team members most days of the week.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship I have learnt many new valuable skills that will help me to become a better engineer when I come to roll off. These are not just technical skills that have been picked up through various different rotations around the engineering business, but also soft skills too such as presentation, communication and team working skills. GE offers many different training courses that can be undertaken, as well as various ones that are offered throughout the time on the apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy the programme, as I feel it offers a very good balance between technical learning and interpersonal skills. The company culture is also good, everyone is always happy to help out if you are stuck on something. I also enjoy the type of work as it is technical and logical, which also allows you to apply what you have learnt in your degree in real time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think that the programme is very well structured, in the way that as you go through the years of the apprenticeship, you begin to build up more responsibilities and by having 6 month rotations through different parts of the engineering business, it allows you to see which type of engineering works best for you by the time you roll off into a full time job.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a very good support network at GE allowing access of support or guidance whenever needed. Each apprentice is assigned a mentor when they start at the company, typically an older year apprentice, who will stick by them throughout the programme and be there to help out in any way. Our apprentice manager is also very supportive, and is always happy to offer advice or guidance on anything work (or non-work) related. Throughout rotations, you will also be assigned a rotation manager who oversees your current rotation.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support given by GE when working towards qualifications is good, for each exam we are allowed a day study leave the business day before to revise for the upcoming test. For the first three years of the apprenticeship, study will be done at Gloucestershire College who are very supportive in all academic activities. For years 4 and 5 of the apprenticeship, study is done at the University of The West of England.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think very well, there have been occasions where I can come from University one day and back into work to directly use something I have learnt the previous day! Having a degree that works so closely with the sort of work that is done at GE Aviation works really well as it means as you go through the apprenticeship you are learning both from your degree and your colleagues around you in rotations.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots of different types of activities to get involved with around GE. Most of them are ran by employees and they can include things such as a football get together, or cycling club. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved with school career events throughout the time on the apprenticeship which help to enhance your soft skills.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend GE Aviation to a friend (or anyone) because of the friendly work place atmosphere and the support of everyone around you that it offers. The apprenticeship is very well structured and offers good learning and development throughout so it is definitely something I would recommend to someone!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • Just be yourself! The application process is as follows, you will send in your application form, you will then be invited to take part in a video interview, then if that goes well you will be invited onsite to do an assessment centre. These usually take place with roughly 4-6 other candidates and they are designed to see how you tackle a task and work together as a team.
