  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Well my role varies every 6 months as I rotate around my work cell. At the moment I am on inspection. This involves testing the boards that have been built on the line and making sure they have been built correctly. If there are problems then its quite cool fault finding the board to find the fault.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Well my previous job had nothing to do with electronic and electrical engineering so I can into this brand new career very much knowing nothing but eager to learn. A new skill I have learnt at college is soldering, before the apprenticeship I had never soldered, so that is a brand new skill I can take into my work when my apprenticeship has finished. My knowledge on all things electrical has vastly improved, from current, voltage, components and how to test them when fault finding.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love it, I started my apprenticeship in my mid 20s having being stuck previously in a job that was going nowhere. Now I wake up excited to go to work and college knowing I'm getting paid to learn and earn qualifications. Aviation was something I was always interested in so to have a job where you can be a part of it and contribute to it is brilliant.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Its well organized in my opinion, you always know what's going on and what's expected of you. Any information that is needed for you is always delivered by work and the college so I have no complaints my end. Meeting are often held between myself, my work and the college so I know how I'm getting on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support is always there when you need it, if I have any for of problem in which I would need support then I have a variety of option that I can go to. If I needed any form of support regarding work then I have a great team coach and a great facilitator who are very friendly and approachable. If I had any problems regarding college then I could speak with my apprentice manager or my college training coordinator who again, are both very approachable.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support is always there when you need it at college, at Gloucester college they have some great tutors who you can tell really enjoy teaching us the different subjects. Another thing to mention would be the colleges VLE, their online website where you upload your assignments and its a great place to look things up as its full of information and presentations.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In my opinion, everything that you learn at college will some day help you out in the workplace. As mentioned I am currently on inspection so all I have leant about circuits and components really comes in handy. I have also recently finished the topic of fault finding in college, which again is another task that happens on my current rotation. Its a great felling to put something to use in work that you have learnt in college, it feels great and makes you realize you have made the right choice in career paths.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At GE there is always activities happening outside of work. There is always events in which you can volunteer to help, such as at Christmas we have a group of people collect Christmas trees when people have finished with them and now and then there will be volunteers to paint a school. Obviously at the moment with the COVID pandemic there hasn't been any activities but I'm sure they will start up again once this is all over.
