  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently on day release from college in hangar 61 at London Luton airport. My day to day roles include carrying out maintenance on aircraft, building experience in the workshops that are both sheet metal and composite workshops. Also I am currently on a placement in our power plant.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my period at TUI I have built my knowledge in fields such as human factors, avionics, practical skills such as drilling, riveting, countersinking, carrying out composite repairs such as prepreg and wet lay up. I am constantly learning new things as each day progresses and believe everything to be positively building my experience.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am loving this programme that is carried out by TUI and it enables me to carry on with my passion for fixing things and working in my chosen field that is aviation. The four year programme is very beneficial to me and I believe at the end I will be well qualified and competent to carry out my job to a high level

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured we spend 6 weeks in each department in the company which helps us to gain knowledge on how each area operates as well as shadowing experienced engineers who give you tips and are always keen to explain what they do how things work and why they do it.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive great support from TUI, they allow us to take time away from work to study to allow us to get the results we need from our exams and they also pay for our travel to college which is great financial support on their behalf as it’s an hour commute.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider is Stansted airport college, they are a new organisation so sometimes they are a bit lapse in certain areas such as with their organisation not being told lesson start times until the day before and having to chase up senior management to get a schedule for the year. In saying this there has also been a good experience with learning there.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • One of our tutors actually used to carry out the role that we are training to become so it is great to be able to have somebody who understands what day to day responsibilities you carry out. He is very knowledgable and the skills he has taught me has helped me to perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is very few activities going on right now due to covid however I believe before this there was various activities that were going on such as arranged football with the lads or golfing events that anybody can get involved in. Obviously this is due to change as we come out of lockdown.

  • 9a. Would you recommend TUI UK & Ireland to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • TUI is a great company to work with, everybody in the organisation wants to help you to better your development. If you have any questions they are happy to answer them and explain in detail. You get to see how a great airline is run and spend time in every area.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to TUI UK & Ireland?
  • You must be driven to succeed and have a passion for maintaining and fixing things. Also have a basic knowledge on how aircraft fly in regards to lift, thrust, gravity and balance. Possibly to have some sort of practical experience or experience in aviation, this is not essential but will help you.
