  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role includes collaborating with stakeholders within the business to produce high quality software solutions and being responsible for the end-to-end software development, including application design, build, testing and implementation.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've had the opportunity to develop my programing skills, including design patterns, configuration data science and testing. I've also learnt to develop software using Docker, AWS architecture, Grafana, MySQL and NoSQL, and take on additional training through Pluralsight and QA Academy for data engineering and software design.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The culture at TUI is great and the programme is well supported by Sheffield Hallam University, who works in close contact with TUI. The course has met my expectations, although I think to achieve a distinction, more than 20% of work-based time (the current recommended amount) is required.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme felt well-structured and thought out, with all the knowledge I've gained throughout the course coming together nicely for my final year project. Quarterly meetings with the work-based coach and my mentor were always supportive and insightful.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager and mentor have incredibly supportive attitudes, although there were times where more in-house software development training and support within my organisation might have complemented my learning, instead of being left to self-teach on many aspects. Nevertheless, guidance on any issues I had were otherwise very helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The lecturers at Sheffield Hallam University have been fantastic, very approachable and compassionate towards any issues I've had and constructive on any feedback I've requested. Lessons and lectures were interesting, well-structured and taught with charisma.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The projects I've undertaken as a result of my qualification have built me a versatile portfolio of modern best practices and software solution ideas using modern software technology and practices, most of which I can easily apply to my role. I feel I know and understand a lot more about the technology industry now.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are social groups, such as the TUI band, TUI choir, LGBT society and the TUI Care Foundation for charity work. I've also taken part in the company-hosted AWS day with Amazon, and Christmas socials.

  • 9a. Would you recommend TUI UK & Ireland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is an ambitious but friendly growth mindset here, and our on-going transition to digitise presents an exciting time for the travel industry.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to TUI UK & Ireland?
  • Present yourself based on the T.U.I culture - what makes you Trusted, Unique and Inspired? There's no right or wrong answer, only what makes you stand out as a candidate. The application process is friendly and relaxed, with interviews designed as conversations rather than a formal Q&A.
