Associate Consultant Review

My role as an Associate Strategy Consultant mainly involves consulting strategic projects and/or initiatives for clients whom are predominantly (re)insurers. Common projects include market entry, assessing competitor landscape, performance optimization and pricing. Typically, there will be elements of data analytics in each project alongside research and interviews with third parties.

I have definitely learned many new skills while developing existing skills throughout my time with the firm. Most of my new skills involve data analysis such as using Alteryx and utilising PowerPivot to create databases. I also polished my VBA skills here while creating data models for projects which are more analytical.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme since I joined and the main reason for that is because of the team/colleagues and the company culture. Overall, the working environment here allows each of us to bring our whole selves to work which then allows us to fulfil our fullest potential in regards to personal and professional development

The programme is relatively well organised because it is relatively new compared to other divisions. The programme started a couple years back but is evident that there are dedicated people within the firm that are passionate in building and developing the programme to ensure that the apprentices' learning and development are maximized.

I have received immense support from my employer and my line manager in helping me achieve my learning and development goals. I have received adequate amount of support for my professional qualifications (ACII) and on the job guidance by senior colleagues when resourced onto any projects. Generally, the team is very supportive.

The biggest support I received from my training provider is their general positive attitude in helping me achieve my targets in obtaining my professional qualifications. This includes workshop sessions aimed to help the apprentices revise for the exams and/or assignments. The resources available to do that were really useful as well.

Through the apprenticeship, I get to complete my Advanced Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) professional qualifications which is really helpful for my role. On a day-to-day basis, I get to apply the knowledge I've learned from the qualifications to the strategic projects that I work on and add value for the clients.

There are a wide array of extra-curricular activities available in my firm such as volunteering opportunities, mentoring opportunities and sports-related events such as a cycling trip. The most common one that I tend to be involved in are company social activities such as monthly team drinks with colleagues and celebratory team drinks during festive seasons

The firm highly advocates for diversity, equality and inclusion which means that colleagues appreciate diversity of thoughts as well. Generally, the people in this firm are amazing and great to work with. There aren't any politics and minimal sense of hierarchy within the team. It is a great place to start your career in.

The best advice I can give is to bring your authentic selves during the interview process once you have passed the application process. Being yourself is really important because skills can be developed but not personality which Aon is more keen in. Prepare by reading about the firm and have fun during the assessment day.
