  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I get given jobs to write software. These can be quite challenging and educational as they often require me to use different programming languages, some of which I haven't had much/any experience with before. This can often get a little stressful but that can be managed and other team members are very helpful and supportive. I find finishing a job can be very rewarding.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship I have learnt a large range of skills in many different areas. Some of these are soft skills and some are in other areas mainly in programming. I have learnt a variety of programming languages, learnt about technologies that I had never even heard of before, and I have developed a better understanding of how things work and how software is developed.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My colleagues are very helpful and supportive and are happy to help and answer any questions that I have. There have also been so many learning experiences that I have learnt a lot from.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured but to start with the structure wasn't great since we were the first engineering apprentices at hpe but for any new apprentices the structure should be good from the start as this has been figured out. The college programme is very well structured as well with a clear direction to where the course is going which makes it easy to follow.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my mentor, my manager, my college lecturer, and my colleagues. Everyone is happy to help and answer any questions or concerns that I have. It can be intimidating at first asking for help but this is something that you shouldn't worry about since everyone is very friendly and they are happy to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support I get from my training provider is great. I'm given plenty of resources to assist my learning and my lecturer is very helpful and open to questions and suggestions. The lessons are very well structured and easy to follow. Even though most of the learning is independent my lecturer is always happy to help with any queries about my learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Learning about software development with my training provider is very useful and gives me the knowledge and skills I need in my role and helps me to produce better quality code, and to work more effectively. Some of the things that I have learnt about with my training provider are things that I never knew id need to know and i'm already using these skills in my work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work there are a very large range of extra activities. There are team social meetings, quizzes, creative days, etc... Some of these are regular some of these happen less often. However, since the pandemic there aren't as many activities as there used to be and currently they are all remote.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Hewlett Packard Enterprise to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • This is a great place to work. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, there have been many great experiences, I have learnt so much from this apprenticeship, and there are a lot of benefits to working here too. In addition to all of this there are many options to choose where you want to go with your career and the work is very flexible. This has been a great experience so far and I think this is a great place to work for anyone looking for an apprenticeship in software development.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hewlett Packard Enterprise?
  • Anyone applying to work here should do their research about the company to get a good understanding of what the company is about and what they do. You should mention any software development experience on your CV no matter how trivial it may seem as this will benefit you in your application. Be honest on your application. Lying about skills wont be of benefit since you may be asked questions about your CV in your interview. Lastly, try to be confident when going to your interview. The interviewers are very friendly and do a great job of making you feel comfortable and they are very understanding.
