  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job involves shadowing other fitters to learn different methods of diagnostics, repair and replace, treatments and coating, drivetrain, hydraulics, air systems etc on HGVs from 3.5 tonne to 32 tonne including gritters, tippers, grabs

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills and knowledge. something i like with this apprenticeship is that i get taught through doing the job, i often get given a task told how to do it and let have a go which means i learn a lot.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme so far as its exactly what i want to do. I learn a lot through this job and the colleges are very supportive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think the apprenticeship is well organised on the balfour side but due to covid i am yet to start my college course still after 8 months.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get a lot of support from the employer and colleagues, they always help me to learn new skills and teach me a lot. Balfour beatty also have a "balfour buddy" system where they assign early careers employees someone they can go to if they have any issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am yet to start my college course due to covid.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am yet to start college, but after viewing the course i think its going to be very beneficial as its very in depth.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Balfour beatty have an early careers programme in place in which they hold a lot of networking events including time away on a team building event.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • very supportive, big company but still recognise the small people, very big on health and safety, push to progress people careers with training, courses and extra qualifications. The pay is also good.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • The assessment process involved a good few steps with culture fit assessments to check if you share the right values, maths and English tests, multiple interviews etc. A tip would be to pursue it and follow through with the same momentum as its definitely worth it.
