  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Civil Servant within the Home Office providing real-time Critical incident management for front my colleagues within immigration and customs colleagues across the south of England and west Wales. I lead of team officers who maintain a 24 seven watch as duty officers to ensure we provide excellent customer service to front line managers

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a significant amount of management theory which is assisting my development as a new manager. Moreover since becoming a manager of other leaders I am learning how to delegate affectively and how to deploy a range of different leadership styles. I have learnt the importance of empathy.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I wouldn’t say I am enjoying the program however I am certainly grateful for the beneficial aspects of it. I am motivated to complete the program to achieve the level five academic qualification and intern been able to gain chartered manager status as a professional recognition of my management ability.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the program is very well organised my skills coach meets with me regularly and provides feedback in a timely manner. My skills coach also provides clear advice and guidance when I need to resubmit a workbook in order to achieve a pass status. I have a clear timeline of what and when I am to submit work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As an experienced manager I’m not offered specific support from my employer however I am in powered to undertake the program myself. I am in powered to allocate my own learning time to complete a qualification but know where I can ask for support from my line manager if required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a significant amount support support for my learning provider via my skills coach. They provide comprehensive written feedback on my workbook assignments explaining how I met the criteria or where sections need referring what I need to do in order to demonstrate a pass. The feedback is always comprehensive.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Even after the first workshop and workbook I have noticed the tremendous value of learning about leadership and management. I’ve started to value leadership and management as a profession and as a learnable skill it is something that must be taught in order to have affective leaders for the future.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • There is a significant amount of job security as a public-sector organisation. Moreover working for the civil service I get a huge amount of pride that I’m contributing to the nation and that I am serving the public to ensure that government is carried out affectively in their best interest.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
  • Apply for any job within the department that you have an interest in. Whilst the role within the department you apply for may not specifically meet all the interests that you have working for a department that is aligned to your core beliefs and values will give you a tremendous amount of pride.
