As a Modernisation Lift Engineer, every day is different. To put it briefly, my role is to upgrade existing lifts. This can include, installing new technology for a more energy efficient lift, new electronics, or new mechanics for better ride quality etc.
I’ve learnt many skills during my apprenticeship. Working in the lift industry allows you pick up skills relating to both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, best of both worlds.
I enjoy the practical side far more than the theory side, however I'm constantly learning something new either way, which is great!
The training provider OTIS use can be very unorganised. I’ve experienced lack of communication and last minute decisions relating to the course, which can sometimes feel like you’re being messed around. However OTIS are pretty quick on their feet to sort out any problems that have occurred.
I receive a good amount of support from my employer, I know that if I am struggling with anything or have any problems, there’s always someone who will be happy to help me out.
I receive a decent amount of support from my training provider. It’s made very clear what I need to do in order to achieve my qualifications.
My qualification helps me perform better in my role. This is because it identifies and takes you step by step through the mechanisms and electronics of every component used in different lifts.
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 this is rare. However OTIS utilise virtual activities as a substitute.
Yes
Provides a great environment to learn and opens the doors to numerous opportunities.
You don’t need to be a lift enthusiast to apply, but you need to be aware that there’s a lot to learn. Ask questions, you’re not going to be expected to know everything so utilise your apprenticeship to gain as much relevant knowledge possible.
