  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • There is a large variation in the day to day experience, no two days are the same. Initially, work may consist of largely administrative activities however this quickly develops as you gain greater skills and develop into your career. Your role is often to support seniors and managers in different projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills, EY provides internal training in addition to training provided by Kaplan International towards your professional qualification. This means you develop a variety of skills both specific to your role within your team and broader accounting skills which are needed by all across the industry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme to a large extent, it has provided me with a great alternative to university given the current pandemic. The programme provides young people with a chance to learn and earn simultaneously, with training from a great institution and a wide variety of knowledge provided from your seniors.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly well structured, when you join you are appointed a buddy, a counselor and an apprenticeship coach, along with a peer support group. All these people act together to ensure ever employee feels supported in their development. However, there could be some improvements in this area due to the pandemic.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my buddy, counsellor, apprenticeship coach and peer support network. However, like all companies the moving to work from home has changed the dynamic and it often feel like support may be lacking, Ernst & Young is currently working hard to try and rectify this situation.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Kaplan International along with the EY internal Talent team provide a lot of support to those studying for a qualification whilst working. The Kaplan website provides online learning resources, such as textbooks and question, functions to contact a tutor and also group communication is highly encouraged. This makes learning a more collaborative environment.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification training means that I can better perform my job as whilst I have not yet reached my tax qualification, I have a better understanding of how the accounting world functions and I have an understanding of many of the processes needed to succeed in this field during my career.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is an extremely wide variety of events and clubs to participate in. There is a network to help with studying, sports clubs, the women's network (which is open to everyone), disability networks for a wide variety of physical and mental problems (Including dyslexia) and networks for a wide range of the major religions.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It has provided me with numerous opportunities and is an excellent experience for those who want to learn on the job instead of attending university and accruing a large amount of debt. The team feeling means there is lots of opportunities for development (both personal and in your career). It is great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I would say to make sure that you are being true to yourself, don't pretend to be something you are not as individuality is highly recommended within EY. If you have a teams interview, try and ensure your camera is on as it is so much nicer to converse that way.
