  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a technical higher apprentice involves a rotation schedule, spending periods of time across all the different laboratories across Tata Steels site. While there, I undertake training of routine tasks, developing improvement projects. There is emphasis on health and safety, critical to quality factors and working to production deadlines.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the apprenticeship scheme, a range of skills have been developed. While at work I have learnt team working and project planning skills, my experience has learnt me to work to deadlines, solve problems and communicate effectively. While at college I have had the opportunity to better my digital literacy, numeracy and literacy skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the programme, I enjoyed working as part of a team, picking up new skills and gaining experience. The company and my colleagues were happy to help me reach my personal goals and this helped me to develop myself. I found the whole programme to be a very positive experience and would highly recommend it to anyone.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I thought the programme was very well structured, I always felt confident that there was a plan in place for me, that there was always a good training path planned out and it was easy to follow and allowed me to grow in so many areas. There was an excellent balance between work responsibility and study time. I was allowed and encouraged to take responsibility and to not shy away from a challenge.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I always received a lot of support from my employer, whenever i required it, someone was happy to help me out. My manager always pushed me to grow, and my training mentor always made me feel confident and would often reach out to me to instruct me on things that i am doing well or thing I needed to work on.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive good support from my training provider when working towards my qualifications. I'm also encouraged to continue to achieve more qualifications, as soon as one opportunity is complete, the company push me into further education. During these courses, I receive good support to help me achieve my goals and have always thoroughly enjoyed working towards my ambitions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My apprenticeship set me up really well to perform my role to the highest of my ability. I learned work skills and life skills that have helped me develop myself as an asset to the business. I have put a number of the skills I learned through my apprenticeship to use in my every day working career.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been invited to and run numerous company engagement days, these are a great way to meet new people, and create new relationships with colleagues and customers. I have made a number of very good friends from my time with the business, friends I will stay in contact with for good.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel that TATA steel are a great company to work for, through the experiences I've had, the qualifications I've earned, the friends I've made and the life skills I've been lucky enough to earn, I owe a lit of this to TATA steel. They often promote self improvement are always keen to support me when I need it .


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel?
  • I would advise everyone to take their time, to learn about the company and apply this knowledge when applying and throughout the interview, I would advise them to challenge themselves every day and to ask the company for the support to improve themselves. Take up all opportunities offered to you and push yourself, the company will push you if you push yourself. Enjoy it and appreciate the opportunity you've been given.
