  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role at William hare currently is a fabricator and welder apprentice and this involves day to day activities such as fabricating whatever is required to the standards provided by William hares and the job of which it is related too, this also means welding to a high standard and following all HASAW acts and British standards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting my apprenticeship i have developed many prior skills and learnt new skills which i did not have before starting, when i started i only knew the basis of engineering but working on the shop floor and at college has provided me with a wide range of useful skills and vital information to carry out jobs correctly and safely.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Through-out this programme i have found that i have generally enjoyed both the fabrication and hands on side of work but also have enjoyed learning about the other side of the job which is the theory behind it all and this is down to being surrounded by people who are willing to help and explain if you do not fully understand

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the apprenticeship plan is set out quite well by working with our college and providing us a set day where we are required to complete all units chosen for this exact apprenticeship. It has been tough through covid but they have still found us time to carry out any necessary work so we do not fall behind.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • through out the apprenticeship we have come across problems like having to move colleges due to certain reasons but this got dealt with fairly well and resulted with us being provided with a better learning environment and if we ever have any problems with work or college we are able to resolve these with out employer or supervisors which will report back to him

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As for now we are working on out level 3 NVQ which requires us as apprentices to carry out a job on the shop floor and then write up in detail about this job, doing it through the pandemic has been tough due to college being closed but as soon as we were able too return or have a tutor come in to work than this was organised and provided us with support through-out

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Having the qualification through the training provider has not only helped my progression through having adequate training and having correct knowledge on how to use tools and equipment but also knowing the theory side of it all drastically improves the way we perform as workers because we are able to relate back to useful and correct notions of how work is completed correctly and safely under all British standard

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • A lot of the workers within Scarborough William hare have taken it out of their own time to set up football matches after work on Tuesdays and in the past have had annual football games against other William hare sites from around the country. We also take part in charitable events such as dragon boat races and sponsored walks.

  • 9a. Would you recommend William Hare to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • William hares provides a solid base for any person wanting to travel down the route of engineering by firstly laying out a well structured apprenticeship system by giving their apprentices a good learning location (college) and also a good place to apply this information learnt along the way (the shop floor). All workers in William hares are easy to approach and very willing to help you learn.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to William Hare?
  • If i were to give any advice to any body wanting to apply for William hares i would tell them to go for it and if you do not with to carry on after the apprenticeship at least you have a great set of qualifications to fall back on. William hare is a great place to work and would advice anybody to apply.
