  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a general manager of a pub/ restaurant. I control the day to day running of the site. This includes managing shifts, looking after internal performance issues. All ordering and stock control. Profit and loss accountability. Hiring and firing. Looking after the training needs of all team members who work for me.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My apprenticeship is based upon operations management so I am currently learning about leading leaders which is a role which I am currently not doing in my day to day working life. It uses a mix of my current skills and is also teaching me new ways of approaching and tackling challenges.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my apprenticeship and the experience it has given me. It is nice to meet leaders from different fields from myself and see things in a different way. It is also very positive to be around people who are as motivated and as career focused as I am.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I find the programme to be very well structured. We were given all our webinar and course dates before we started our course in order for us to organise our time effectively. We are also given plenty of course notes and aids online which are helpful when reflecting on our experiences.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very helpful. He has given me all the support I require and has helped to keep me focused and motivated where needed. He has also allowed me to set time aside in my working week in order to complete the required work and reading. Overall I'm very pleased with support levels.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I find the training provider to be very supportive so far. It is important to keep in touch with your personal trainer as they provide the necessary help and additional aids you may require. They also work on keeping you on track so that you don't fall behind in your work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am confident that my apprenticeship will help me perform better in my current and any future role I have. Even though I am currently furloughed, I am already looking at ways to implement aspects of my training in order to get the best out of my team and myself.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many ways in which we can get involved socially. For example there are several Facebook groups set up by the company in order to become more actively involved in the company and find new ways to showcase your achievements. There are also incentives such as team and area parties to be won.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mitchells & Butlers to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have worked for many hospitality companies throughout the years and can honestly say that Mitchells and Butlers are by far the best. Everyone from day one makes you feel so welcome and the induction process is top notch. Senior management make you feel like a valued member of the team which to me personally is very important.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells & Butlers?
  • My biggest piece of advice would purely be to just give it a go! Hospitality is a hard sector to work in, even more so during the ongoing pandemic. However my company has supported myself and my team every step of the way and made us feel that the new ways of working are achievable and can still be fun.
