  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves completing user stories around REST APIs. The team I am working with follows the scrum methodology which means we work in two-week sprints and take part in many scrum ceremonies. I spend lots of time learning from the other developers in the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned about software development processes and how to work successfully in a large team. Prior to starting my apprenticeship, I was teaching myself C# and making my own games. Since starting, I have learned principles and practices I had not encountered that improve the quality of my code.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised and I have a clear understanding of the structure of the course. At work, I have been given access to Pluralsight which I have found very useful for my studies. During the week, I have enough time between working on tasks to learn.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider offers a lot of support. Feedback is given on all the reports I write and my trainer always gives me helpful advice. I attend college every Tuesday where there have been lots of great opportunities and engaging talks from guest speakers on a variety of topics.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification teaches a wider variety of topics than what I would learn at work. I have used knowledge gained through my qualification to improve my performance at work. The qualification also covers careers in software development which I have enjoyed and has made me think more about my future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As we are working from home, there have been a few social activities held on Teams. Around Christmas, there were quizzes and an online escape room where we worked in groups to solve. Recently, I joined the UK Technology forum which aims to find technologies for the business to use.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Volkswagen Financial Services to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a great place to work, everyone is very supportive and happy to help. There are lots of benefits available such as a loan car and a bonus.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Volkswagen Financial Services?
  • For the interview, be honest and enthusiastic. As an apprentice, you are not expected to know everything, always ask if you do not understand, even if you think it is a silly question. During the onboarding process, I would recommend getting a password manager!
